Thoughts on Equinox Fitness?

Has anyone ever been a member of or been an employee at Equinox Fitness? I have an interview at their San Francisco club next week as a trainer and would like some impressions. Pay, atmosphere, pressured to prospect, etc.
Also, what are your views on NESTA? I'm trying to research a national certification I can get, problem is imma broke brotha. And Nesta is on my immediate price range.

Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays!

I thought this thread would be about riding horses.

NESTA is ok, but it isn't that cheap. You can take the NSCA or NASM for that same price, you just need to buy the book. You have more leverage with those 2 certs and, as P-funk said, it usually paid for if you pass.

If sense were common, everyone would have it.

they didn't pay for it all (the cert that is). They may now, I don't know. About 4 months before I quit, to move to AZ, Ivonne and I got our CSCS becasue they had just formed the partnership and we were allowed to sit for the exam at a discounted price (which was nice).

Oh any big gym, Equinox pays really well....health insurance if you are full time, they have lots of conitnuing education, and bring in guys like Boyle and Lee Taft to do seminars (for a reasonable rate). That last part alone was the best to me.

High profile clients means lots of money for training. The clients, being high profile, are usually very type A. Don't know about San Fransico, but in NYC, people don't put up with to much shit. If you can get people results, you are going to fill up your book real quick!

Thanks for the advice. The Equinox in the Bay Area is in the Financial District, pretty much Type As there. I want to learn as much as possible, so I will take your advice and get NASM or NSCA. My nutrition knowledge sucks, mainly because I am an ecto with a superfast metabolism, and I am on that "seefood" diet.

So will they hire me without a cert and give me the 90 day grace period to attain one like Ballys and 24HourFitness? The Ballys interview sucked, by the way. The first thing he said to me was " So how are you going to prospect people off the floor?" It was all about sales, depressing.

Cheers.

you will have to prospect the floor at equinox also.

the thing is that the clientle there is really upscale and there is more of an opportunity to get people to sign up for training. Out of ten new member leads, you may turn 3 of them into clients.

That is very good. he gym I am at is full of Dr.'s, lawyers, business owners, etc. Out of 10 prospects, you may sign .2 up. It really boggles my mind, people in this area are cheap.

yea, that is what they tell you......3 out of 10.

Probably closer to 1 or 2 out of 10. It isn't to hard though. The people at Equinox are a pretty easy sell for PT.

Hmm, what happens if you don't make your sales quota? What is their criteria for hiring? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to be prepared fro the interview.
Thanks again.

Angry equinox Jobs

As a Former Mgr. of 4.5 yrs.,,,,this Company is a horrible place to be employed. No one should waste their efforts on this company. They have no regard for their staff or members. The Long Island clubs are proof to how mis-managed the company is. In the last year there has been a rotating door of staff, anyone with "clout" in the industry was either forced out or fired. I, myself was "exceeding goals;" however, they decided to move me out, by creating an "issue" for accomodating a member, that the GM knew about. The company is now operating w/unknown/newbie instructors & staff. creating a different environment that is neither educational or worth what the membership fee is per month...

Equinox is the worst company in the fitness business to work for. They are not honest & treat the staff horribly. They pressure for #'s which is o.k., get you to produce etc., then pull the rug out from under you. Life extpectancy is 3yrs. The company prides itself on Disposable income & disposing of staff..

My wife recently spoke to a trainer at our gym. She asked the trainer about the protein bars they sold. He said not to buy any because they were crap. Gotta love it.
