    Java Project

For my java class I have to make a program as a final grade, anyone have any ideas? One of the samples he gave us is tic-tac-toe, It doesn’t have to be too complicated (it has to involve a little logic)… Or better yet, anyone knows were I can steal the code for a program like this

Make a blackjack training program where the player can choose to hit, stand or double and then the program tells the user if he made the correct move...

The correct strategy for blackjack should be pretty easy to find on the web.

You can use cards.dll to help draw the cards.

They teach Java as a first language so that you will have a good foundation. Don't cheat yourself.

Wow I learned Assembly Language as my base language how do you guys get the easy stuff like Java and Visual Basic?

You might try a length or time converter or something of that nature. I don't know how basic it's allowed to be, but I found source code for some basic programs like these on my own and modified the code a little to create what I wanted. You could also make an applet and embed it into a web page if you know HTML for a little something extra that's kind of cool.

Assembly Language should be the first thing learned. These kids now program and have no idea about things like stacks and heaps and memory management...

Hey, it's not that easy to teach yourself an advanced language without any help and using the time you have on the side. Plus not everyone wants to go deep into hardcore programming. What do you expect? I'm not some prodigy. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be jack of all trades, master of none in the world of knowledge before you go to college.

It's totally easy to teach yourself an 'advanced' language. I was writing my own games in C by the time I was 14... at a time before they really had any computer classes in school

That may be true, but there are other factors. Besides the fact that it's much easier to learn if you start really young, it seems like you had some kind of very good guide. If not, it probably took a lot more time than most are willing to commit to something on the side. Just because you had the opportunity to really get down to what you feel is important and basic doesn't mean everyone does. Besides, what happened to the positive outlook of something like, "Well, at least they're teaching themselves something useful, constructive and mind-stimulating"? Additionally, I hope you don't doubt that there are kids much younger than fourteen who could probably school most adult programmers today anyways. They're out there for sure. It just happens that I'm not one of them, and that Mike doesn't seem to be one either. I simply enjoy dipping into different pools of knowledge and seeing which ones are to my liking.

That seemed much more offensive than it was supposed to be, so don't take it that way. I'm just trying to make a point.

The thing is he isn't even learning Java obviously if he is asking where he can get sample code to steal and re-use as his own...I guess it may be hard for some but I was a whiz in all of my Programming classes, Assembly, C++ and Visual Basic my teachers all wanted me to go into programming but the thought of a career writing code my whole life was scary....it's fun but I could never see myself doing it as a job....

Fair enough, but I think it's hard to find the time to teach myself anything advanced while trying to keep up with everything else I want to learn.

To be a polymath or Homo universalis is tough but if you dump enough energy to scheduling properly look at guys like Da Vinci and Jefferson who rarely slept....if they did it was in their studies where they could wake up and continue. But take pride in being a philomath....

yes I am having a hard time with it, I actually regret that I ever took the course (yes I find it interesting, but I am in fear of failing the class).

There is one kid in my class that is an absoluute genius in programming, no joke he teaches the teacher things, and when the teacher can't figure something out he does it in like 2 seconds. He has made a full black jack game, including all features like an amount of chips, how many you want to bet, doubling down, splitting, etc. about 5 thousand lines of code, lol. He is the only one that knows what he is doing in the class, no one else knows how to program for their life. I don't know if we the kids are just stupid or if it is the school's fault.

Oh, I certainly take pride in it. I just realize that I can't learn everything I want to learn all at once. There's just so much more out there it's crazy. With all due respect, times were much different for Da Vinci and Jefferson. While they were certainly geniuses, they discovered mostly things that are pretty basic compared to today's standards. For example, you're not going to cure cancer in your spare time without some sort of advanced equipment, which means not only a lot of work but also a lot of money (well, it's probably possible, but you know what I mean).

My biggest problem at the moment is sleep. I swear if I could just sleep well at night and for long enough, I could accomplish anything I wanted to do. This isn't an exaggeration, but life is truly terrible without enough sleep.

The other problem is finding a college that allows me to learn like a true polymath. I think I may have found it, but I just need to get in now.
