Did anyone watch the Today show yesterday that spoke about American car quality over Japanese car quality?

Their focus was that the public doesnt bother with american cars due to reliability issues. They game some numbers about how GM and Ford are STILL losing sales, while Toyota is becoming larger than GM.

They then did some interviews with people that test cars for Consumer Reports. They showed 2 SUVs, 1 japanese, 1 american, doing an emergency evasive manuveur while on a wet road. The amercan car not only hit the cones, but couldnt get back onto the main path. The japanese suv hit a couple of cones, but managed to straighten out.

Another test showed a 60-0mph branking test between a saturn and....shit I dont remember, but when they stopped at the camera, you clearly saw the japanese car broke shorter than the American.

One of the people they interviewed used to work on an american assembly line and now works independently performing "soak tests." He puts a car in garage type unit that constantly pours water on the car. In any case, when asked what it was like to work on the assembly line (years ago), he said his superiors told the workers not "to think about why something is installed this way, but just do it." Meanwhile, people working for a Toyota assembly line (in the US mind you) said that when they have a problem or a suggestion, they are acknowledged and not ignored.

Hah, on the way to work this morning a F-150 rear ended a Toyota Tundra right in front of me. The Ford's front bumper was damaged and hung loose. Smoke came into the Fords cab from the engine. The hood was damaged and loose. The Toyota had no visual issues from the distance I was sitting.

Because the US can't build anything anymore. We have to kick these god damn Mexicans out and make room for the Asians if we want to survive.

All of this is linked to the American car manufacturers' plans (back in the 70s, 80s, and midway into the 90s) to get rid of the second hand auto market.

They figured that the average American only owns a car that they purchased new for around five years. So they decided to build their cars to fall apart after five years; And there goes the used car market.

What actually ended up happening was that they garnered (rightfully so) a reputation for crappy cars. By the time they figured out that their plan was ill conceived, it was too late. The Japanese took the auto market by storm. And now they're trying to play catch up on quality and reputation.

Like I've said before, they tried to screw the American public and now they're paying the price. I say "fuck 'em!"

Yeahhhh I do remember reading that! Do you have a link to where it explains this? Not to discredit you, I actually want to stir up some shit on LS1.com and Ill need back up.

To their defense, at the end of the segment, they did say that the 'gap' between the quality of american vs. japanese is closing, if not closed by now.

    However...

I dont know who the last asshole they spoke to at a detroit car show, but some big wig said "it doesnt matter." "People are more in tuned with the bad reputation and just simply doesnt care nor believe that american cars are now made with quality."

    I concur.

Sorry, but I don't have a link. What I wrote was from memory, which was from something that I read in a book about 5 years ago.

I have to go to a clients, so I can't find anything for you now, but I'll look for something tonight.

Well actually I was just kidding about the Mexican part. I was just making a dumb joke, but I do agree that domestic cars suck donkey balls. I will only buy foreign cars.

I have to admit that my wife drives an 05 Altima and I drive an 04 Crew-cab Frontier 4X4. Before that I drove a 95 Maxima and my wife drove an 00 Ford Contour and her old car finally fell apart in 05. I sold my old car to my dad and he is still drving it back and forth to work and it has a grand total of about 290K miles and no major work. That is a big reason that I bought two more Nissan's and will continue to do so until something better comes along.

We have a Nissan Altima, a Nissan Murano and my Honda Civic...once my girlfriend gets her BMW I get the Murano and I can't wait I love driving that car because it has the CVT, you want to get on the highway quick just floor it and away you go, it feels like you have a jet engine or something because you never feel it shift, just a smooth transition from slow to pretty fucking fast! I love it...
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

I guess I am in a ball park of my own. I buy cars that I can modify to make fast and American cars can do that while maintaining their reliability than MOST imports.

For instance, DSM cars can be made into crazy fast cars, but if you dont do something to the driveline, the fucking thing is useless. I know a friend that had an AWD Galant VR-4 that was in the shop getting fixed while mine was getting upgraded. Sometimes my shit would break, but I would replace the parts with upgrades.

Another friend I had(I guess have) modified the shit out of a honda. Blew the fucking motor. Got a motor "built for the power," got shitty gas mileage and that blew too.

Granted, these are just two examples and just two people. Maybe they were shit heads. Even I was a shit head when I started out. But the civic guy is stilling buiulding up shitty ass hondas. And the galant friend now has an 03 EVO, but never races it. "The clutch is bad in these cars." REPLACE IT. "Then the tranny goes." You see where this leads...?

Ive seen and read about more reliable AND fast domestic cars than imports. Only import that was near indestructible is the last supra models and Id trade my car for one of those. TT models.

Again, I am a hot rod head, so I am all alone.. For a daily driver, yeah Id go with imports.
