    Question about my computer

For some odd reason, my computer has recently been rebooting on its own. I'll be messing around and then boom, it restarts. Anyone know why this could be happening, and I'm pretty sure it's not a virus.

Also, what is a good program to backup my HD and wipe my computer clean. I'm sick of using the windows backup utility and F-disk.

    Thank you

You should use MSCONFIG to stop unnecessary programs from starting up. This usually helps.

It's also a good idea to do a defrag.

And make sure your OS is up to date.

I'm thinking I'm gonna just wipe her clean. It's been about 6 months. Last time I did it though I remember running into quite a few problems. I have an illegal copy of xp and my comp's dvd drive is non bootable. I remember I had to get a copy of 2000, install it, then upgrade with xp and it was just a huge pain in the ass.

I use Acronis Boot Loader for XP backups. A few clicks, and 5 minutes, every 2-3 I have a clean computer.

Also, MozBackup is good to backup firefox bookmarks, history, passwords etc.

Already went through the bios and checked, my dvd rom drive is not bootable. I'm positive about this.

    I'll try that acronis out.

I think what I'll do is just reinstall the xp cd and do a clean install. I'll mess with my partitions during the install. I like starting from scratch with the install but last time I did it I sat at my computer for 3 days straight.

The funny thing is I actually have a degree in computers, more on the networking side but still. I used to know what I was doing.

First open the Program Files Folder and make a list of the programs you have, then find the installable file or cd's for them, save them to an external harddrive or burnable DVD or CD's whatever you have....that way you won't spend so much time trying to rebuild what you had, actually it's better if you check to see if their are newer releases of some of those programs too...save your emails to .pst by exporting if you have outlook, save your bookmarks & cookies, save your documents, DL's, and very importantly any drivers you had to DL....I have a special folder for those.....Thats all I can think of right now to save you some time, I can usually have one of my computers wiped clean and reinstalled in 8 hours....then I'll ghost that install onto a secondary HD and store it, but that's because I have extra HD's...

Open up your tower. See if your motherboard is busted. My computer was restarting itself all the time too, and when I looked at its motherboard, half of the capacitors had blown open!

I actually save all my programs, apps, games etc. to my external HD. I will need to save all my drivers though.
