there's always a risk involved when you download copyright material. Whether if it's BT, Edonkey, Rapidshare, or Megaupload.

But luckily I'm Canadian. Our laws are much more relaxed compared to the US law. It's only illegal to upload, not to download. (with music I'm sure of this, there has been legal cases shot down. But have not found anything on movies)

With rapidshare, you don't have to upload, you just pay 8 bux a month and get maxed out speeds. With torrents, if you don't upload, nobody gives you pieces. So for a Canadian, rapidshare is the way to go.

I'm downloading a Hi-Def movie right now. On Torrents, it would take 3 months to finish. Rapidshare will finish it in 1 hour.

    Dumb question of the night.....

How quick are these torrents for downloading movies???

    Obviously it depends on bandwidth:

    Say 2mb.

So, would an 800mb file download via torrent at roughly the same speed as a standard file of 800mb that was direct from a mirror or site?

No. It depends on the amount of seeds and peers that connect to you.

I consider 80 kb/s a good download rate for most things.

depends how popular the file is, how many people are sharing pieces.
I use to average around 45k downloading 10 files at once. Peaking at 200k and as slow as 1k.

    comparing to HTTP direct download

it depends what site you download from. You can get 1100k+ from rapidshare.

depdending where you are from, I would be careful downloading copyright material.

I've never had that problem with torrents? Only problem I have ever had is sometimes the torrent has some difficult steps to go through to make it a useful file, like one time a movie I got needed a password to unlock it and then had to be converted to a different file type to burn it...finding the password was a pain in the ass because the person who made it didn't give it out when he originally seeded it...

I also only DL obscure music and movies, never any new releases...usually bootleg music or artists who hardly anyone listens to anymore and older movies, like ones you'd see on Turner Classic
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

I don't understand one bit of all that technical stuff on the website. It also seems like a lot of work and I don't want to take my connection down.

Port forwarding is too hardcore for me...

    p.s. Oink! rules.

Sorry.............I'm not an expert, but I'm not giving anybody access to an open port on my computer. Don't you think that is too high of a risk?
