By the way anyone heard news of the God of War movie they were supposed to be making?

While we're on games to movies anyone seen the announcement that Metal Gear is in the works as well?
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear

no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

Looks pretty awesome visually. Of course it's interesting to see the stories society tells to itself and how history is re-written for the moment. The Spartans didn't "defend" freedom; they destroyed the only Democracy of the time-- Athens. And they needed Persian help to do it.

...then we will fight in the shade.

I caught the trailer for this movie on The Departed DVD. I agree that it looks awesome visually. It's by the same guy behind Sin City.

a bit disappointed after watching the trailer and spotting the arrows sticking out of the guy at the end. a bit of a give away he gets done at the end.

Yeah I loved Sin City. I wonder if they will make sequels since I read that there was a whole series of Sin City comic books written.

This movie is about the battle of Thermopylae (sp), when the Persians mounted a giant army to invade Greece the Spartans held them off in a bottle neck valley type of terrain at Thermopylae. The Spartans held off the invading army until a traitor showed the Persians a back route of sorts to surround and kill the Spartans. The Persians suffered such heavy losses however that their campaign was not to be successful after that battle.

The Spartans were a great early Greek civilization and popular to contrary belief had a semi democratic state in ancient Greece which may have pre-dated Athens' own (although Athens is still credited with democracy because it was way more developed). The Spartans had a form of democracy in which the citizens were given power of the political etc decisions within the city-state.

As well, i don't know if they will show this in the movie, the Persians were said to laugh at the Spartans for the femininity before battle (they would clean up, brush their hair etc) however a Persian general of some sort was said to tell the leader not to underestimate the Spartans as they do all that cleaning and what not fully accepting and expecting to die in battle and enter Hades looking presentable. Thats totally badass.

I can't wait to see this movie. I don't go to the movies, ever. Last movie i saw in the theatres was The Departed and before that i don't even remember. I also don't smoke pot, but i think i'll have to make to break both streaks for this one. Fat doobie in the parking lot of the theatre and go check out a nice flick

I have to disagree. I believe the Persians DID make it to Athens, and burned it to the ground, which was against Persian culture at the time. But, if I remember correctly, Xerxes was so pissed off at being held back by 300 Spartans, he ordered Athens destroyed. Oh, and Athens was deserted when the Persians got there. He immediatly ordered the city rebuilt the next day.

Not to mention the Spartans were led by Leonidas who's name means Lion Like....

There were 300 Spartans and 6700 allies, but the Spartans probably did most of the extreme fighting since it was what their entire civilization was bred to do...

The battle was especially important for the nation of Greece. Previously, all the city-states were self governing. Intercity wars were not uncommon. With the threat of an invansion gargantuan in size, the Greeks came together, making the initial steps towards a unified nation.

I think that it is all part of the spartan mythos.

They were probably all gay and hung out and argued about what breast plate looked better with what helmet.

None of them looked like that because clearly there were no gyms, so they probably looked more like a modern day tribesman in africa.

Besides, in those days warriors/soldiers didnt go to battle in a cloak, undies and booties. They wore body amour. The trailer looks interesting, but am not sure that it is going to be a really good movie. Just a feeling.

IMO an action film does not need to be historically accurate to be good. I don't go for the history lesson, I go for the special effects, the explosions, and the battles. I always have to laugh at people when their only reason to not like a movie is because "they didn't stick to the story in the comic book," or "there is no way that could have happened". No shit, that's why it's a feature film and not a documentary.

Especially considering how heavy swords were back then. IMO, sword fights were more like the one in Holy Grail than the ones they show in serious movies.

Thanks Spud and yes I loved Gladiator. Mindless action ... with a solid story line backing it ... makes good entertainment for me.
