Microsoft Vista.....
Anyone installed it yet?
anything I should be wary of before I throw this upgrade disk in?

Most people should ask themselves why is it necessary to upgrade. Upgrade because you have to. For most people, you shouldn't even bother installing Vista for a good 6 -12 months. At the very least wait till sp1 (already in the works, due out 2nd half 2007). Definitely don't put it on something mission critical (even for a home computer).
Myself, I'm going with Ubuntu and xp pro 64.
M$ claims a lot of things with Vista but really DX10 and the aero interface are the 2 things going for vista. Nothing that anyone really needs right now (or needs to bother with). You can "get by" on XP for a good long while before it's absolutely necessary to change OS's. Even M$ has offered support till April 2009 and extended support for 5 years after that. They know XP is a solid and viable solution worth maintaining."If you don't bend those legs and do those squats, you'll never reach your potential."

I went to Ubuntu 2 and half months ago and I'm never going back to Windows.

Vista is a resource hog. You will get no new features, but you will have to run better hardware for it to run stable. I have over $8,000 dollars worth of software programming and database development tools that will not work with vista. WTF? Windows new POS OS will not be supporting Visual studio 2005? It is only 2 fucking years old, and it was developed by Microsoft!
The only good parts to Vista I have seen were concepts stolen straight from apple.
If I were you guys, I wouldn't switch to vista yet. I'm not impressed.

I was reading a technical review on it and the author said the Vista Ultimate, when you have no windows opens are doing nothing, runs at 30% CPU utilization. Originally Posted by KelJu

I'm still not hearing why the upgrade is needed ... XP works fine for most people. Most people log on and pay a bill, email their mom, chat somewhere, print a pic, do some music or another media file
, and that's about it.
Another over bloated OS is not needed ... so
... why the upgrade Wit?
With ubuntu going mainstream I may never upgrade to Vista.

Well thank you all for the valued input.
I've been offline for a couple days (personal reasons) but I went ahead and executed the upgrade.
The reason I went ahead and did it is because due to my inside resource at Microsoft I was able to obtain a copy of Vista Home Premium for about the cost of a large pizza
Anyhow... Here's a few insights I'll pass on to anyone else considering the upgrade.
BACK UP EVERYTHING! I did and thank God for it. Allthough Vista is technically supposed to give you the option of upgrading without losing all your valued data, odds are you'll find some conflict that will require a clean install.
Nortons 2005, McCafees and Nero do NOT play nice with Vista.
Security protocols in Vista are insanely high compared to previous versions.
After recovering my backed up data I was prompted for an administrator's password to open every folder AND every file I had backed up.
After tinkering around with it for an hour I was able to figure out how to change ownership/access rights of ALL my backed up files to the new Vista Administrator account and all is well. I'll admit, after a half hour of attempting to open files and getting blocked by security prompts I was very close to restoring back to my old OS and using the Vista CD as a coaster.
The new navigation and file structure will take some getting used to but, the overall look and feel of the new OS is very nice. You still have the option to run in "classic view" but I kinda like the new one.
I wholeheartedly recomend that prior to install USE THE AUTOMATED ONLINE COMPATIBILITY TEST! I didn't do this on my first attempt and wasted 6 hours as the installation hung on a proggy conflict. Run this diagnostic tool, follow the directions, you should be fine.
