I've been trying to figure out what path I want to take in the Fitness Industry. I've come to the conclusion that I'd like to be PE Teacher.

It really bothers me to see obese/overweight children. So I'd like to be one of the ones trying to do something about that. I'd also like to work with the high school athletes as their conditioning coach. I'm already a certified trainer (non-practicing tho) so I have something to offer them.

I'll have to go back to school full time in the KInesiology program and get a Bachelors in Science in Health Promotion with a teaching certificate.

I know I'm still pretty new here, but I thought I'd let you guys and gals know.

My P.E. teacher was a crazy old bastard. Mr. Mcleese. When you were bad, he'd take his teeth out, yell, and make scary faces. Good guy that Coach Mcleese.

I was a big kid and always thought about getting certified to train with overweight kids. Maybe it would have helped me. Awesome choice

Yeah, me too. I believe that a parent letting their kids become obese is a huge disservice and terrible parenting.

Maybe if you use your certification as a reference to go sit in for a week at a high school class you might get a real time view of what you are really getting into.

Will the money you would make meet your needs if you exclude all other household income?

Will the growth potential of this field be compatible with where you want to be 10 years from now?

Will it sync with your home-life as your own kids come into the picture?

A lot of schools are pushing to hire strength coaches to improve their athletics. They look for peeps who have their teaching credentials so that they can pay this person from state/government funds, without a teaching cert they need to come up with the funds themselves. My goal is to get the creds, move out to AZ, and P and myself will work with the childrens. My main goal is to be the gym teacher, and just train all the athletes as they need to be trained specifically for their sport in gym class...Kids already have enough shit to do in practice and school, why not take 60 minutes of that and make it their strength and conditioning class.

I am probably going for my M Ed, though, but it isn't necessary, a BS and the cert will do, the M Ed just gives you more salary.

If sense were common, everyone would have it.

I want to start out with elementary kids. not high school.

i'm not the main breadwinner at my house. but the perks of the job are what i'm mainly looking toward. i have no retirement or insuracne with my job, this would allow me to have both.

i'm not really sure how much the county will grow. there's no interstate access so it's kind of hidden and tucked away.

Will it sync with your home-life as your own kids come into the picture?
one of the main reasons for this too, is to get my son into a better school system. the one he'll have to go to now is very poor and he'll be going to private school as of now.

There are some great thoughts here! Wise people.

In addition to what they've said...you might consider talking to some PE teachers. See what it's like after 3 years...or 10 years.

It seems like a difficult way to impact lives and habits of young children in a long term way...because you see them for 30 min a week sometimes. It's like working through the masses.

I wonder if there might be some place you could work with the kids/parents who WANT to make changes...but don't know how.

I was just thinking if you have such a heart for change...it might be frustrating.

Working with a 'team' of some sort...Jr High Track Team or something similar...this might allow you to develop a relationship where they might aspire to be like you...you could be a role model.

I had a cheerleading coach and swim coach that I still remember...

Just thinking outloud...

Had a glass of wine...I tend to 'ramble'.

I was a elementary school teacher for 7 years.

Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death.

As someone who is 15 weeks away from teaching physcial education I have one thing to say the last Fing thing our industy needs is another coach in teachers clothing. Stay at the Gym if you wanna train people. I am so Fing sick of coaches making our profesion look bad.

Coaches aren't making your industry look bad, shitty teachers are. I have several kids who can't even do 5 good push-ups, and when they do they try to flare their arms out to the sides. Sit-ups are still a part of most PFTs even though it is an outdated exercise. Most of them run like fucking idiots and have the agility of a grapefruit. I have no idea what the criteria is for becoming a gym teacher, but if she goes through the same process you had to to get certified, how is she any less qualified?

As fat as kids are these days, I probably wouldn't be pushing a profession that is failing at it's job.

If sense were common, everyone would have it.

slider - btw, if you think coaches are making PE teachers look bad, maybe their teaching in the fitness department isn't up to par. perhaps you should educate yourself a little more as not to feel intimidated by others.
