Question Dreaming - Making you tired???

I dream alot, just about every night. The last week I have been going to bed really early, 8.30-9.30, instead of 11.00-12.00. It seems the whole night I have some kind of dream where im constantly on the go. I wake up and still feel tired. At work I get so tired I have to close my eyes and I can start dreaming while not asleep. I can controll the dream to an extent until I slip into it, then wake up and am confused why im at work.

Basically what im asking, is it possible to become exhausted from dreaming?

My mind seems to want to stay in dream land, and when im at work im just tired and want to dream again.

hmm.. i dont think your actually waking up when dreaming... I believe dreaming only happens during REM sleep which is the only type of sleep that you get real rest from. This is how it was explained to me by a psychologist friend anyway.

I've been known to fall asleep and dream within a 5 minute time frame. So, i Don't know if REM occurs that fast.

Of course this only happens when I'm taking a nap.

If I have to fall asleep for the night, it takes 27 years to dream.

I can wake up exhausted after some dreams, like partying, motor bike riding, movie like action scenes, and other adventures.

Yea, I usually have something to hold on to, like a kite or an inflatable tube. Motor bike jumps are good when your jumping houses and floating in the wind.

I took me a while to realise it was a dream. A friend ownes a ZY250 dirt bike and in my dream I was riding that. In the morning I was questioning the tricks I was doing and how huge the jumps were. I came to the conclusion it was a dream.

The problem isn't the dreams, it's the way you think about them.

I have active dreams almost every night (nightmares, really), and it's quite rare for me to feel tired.

I have never had a problem till lately. And I have been going to bed earlier to help the problem, which has made it worse because I dream more.

I'm doubtful that increased dreaming is the problem. You might want to take stock of your life to see if the sources of stress have increased in number or intensity. You may also want to look for changes in your diet.

Sometimes on the right pills I can close my eyes and dream and it gets so intense that I'll wake myself because I'm grabbing for something like a doorknob and the sudden movement of my arm startles me awake...usually happens with stuff that messes with my serotonin...
Also cough syrups with DXM do it to me too....really bad...

Yes, stress has increased. All my friends are fighting because of me and a girl. Also my diet has changed because I have had a tooth problem and cant chew properly.

I was thinking it could have been one of these or both.

You dream before deepest part of rem. Some people have problems entering there deepest rem which sounds like your case. Go to a doc and ask him to refer you to a sleep center where they can tell if this is the problem.

Or the prolonged darkness maybe flooding you with melatonin???? Maybe start going to bed at your usual time or wake up earlier....

You know what the likely problems are, now you need to try to fix them.

This sounds like the root of the problem to me. Also, if you are taking any drugs, or stopped taking any that can affect it a lot too, as maniclion said. I know that I often dream more intensely when I drink, for example. And drinking cuts down on REM sleep from what I'm told, which is part of the reason you need more sleep after binge drinking.

It's my understanding that we dream every night, but it's just easier to remember your dreams when you wake up in the middle of that phase of sleep (REM). Since our brain goes through cycles when we sleep (about 1.5 hours for a full cycle), that would explain why you are remembering your dreams more often when you go to bed at a different time. You're probably just waking up at a different point in your sleep cycle.

Your body should adjust, especially as you get over your stressful situation and begin eating better. But if this has been going on for a couple weeks I'd see a doctor.

This is just basic info from a psychology class I took, plus I watched a Discovery Health special on sleep disorders a couple weeks ago. Most of the people were able to fix their sleep disorders by fixing their eating habits and quitting drug use, thereby reducing stress.

Part of the problem was staying away from the girls so they can sort them selves out, as for diet my tooth needs fixing before I can get back to eating properly.

increased dreaming would not explain why you feel tired. It would more likely have the opposite effect. Dreaming is believed by many to be the whole purpose of sleeping and that our entire attitude, personality, and even health is a direct result of our dreaming. Make of it what you will, but I have never heard of increased dreaming as draining. However, bad dreams as a result of daytime stresses can result in tiredness/exhaustion

I just read the rest of the posts stating that your stress has increased lately. I'd look at that for your answers, not your dreams.

But when certain hormones are out of synch then dreams are just closed eye hallucinations, I experimented with megadoses of melatonin a couple months ago and all kinds of craziness ensued, I have one of the stories I wrote when I hopped out of bed at 4:00am, it was part of a recurring dream and it continued at night and during the day while at work if I would even doze off for a second.....like Mista I would have my mouse in my hand and have clicked links on a page or wake up after I slammed my mouse on the desk.....the little naps would seem like forever but just be like 30 seconds but it would seem like an hour of the dream had passed.....

One time i needed to close my eyes at work, so i went and sat on the toilet. I dremt i was out drinking and sat down on a bench. In the dream i was falling asleep and spilt my can on myself. I woke up upset because I couldnt find my can in my hand, then realised I wasnt wet, and infact at work in the bathroom. I got out ASAP, i didnt know how long I was in there for. It was only 5 minutes.

Ever since talking about dreaming, I have been having more dreams that I am sleeping, and dreaming in my sleep dream.

Last night I dreamed that this girl I like rang me up wanting to come over, I woke up (which is where the dream started) answered the phone and she said she was coming over. I was happy but so tired I fell back asleep.

I woke up and checked my received calls to make sure it really happened and there weren't any.
