Most parts of Alabama still operate that way. We are said to be 50 years behind the rest of the country.

When my dad caught me playing with gasoline when I was 10 he whooped my ass, and I didn't play with gasoline again.

When I was in highschool I had a history professor that whooped my ass at least every two weeks. He had made few grown boys cry with that paddle. I learned more under him than any other teacher.

All of the hunters drove to school with their rifle in the gun rack of their truck. The murder rate in my hometown was about 1 every ten years.

I got into a fight with another student after football practice once. My coach saw us and made us stay after practice doing tackling drills vs each other until we couldn't even stand. That other student and I bring that memory up every time we see each other, and laugh about it. We were friends after that and shook hands every time we saw each other.

My high school expelled students that caused trouble. The student and parents would then have to write an apology to the school, and would be let back in under probational restriction. If they fucked up again they would be kicked out for good and would have to go to another school in the county.

You guys can all thank the losers who expect the government to raise and teach their children for the ass backwards absurd culture we are now. Every time you demand the government to enforce something for our safety, we get a little bit closer to to totalitarianism.

Conservatives are to blame for the ridiculous homeland security policies.

Liberals are to blame for all of the others.

True. But the application the shitty (over-) reaction we see in schools is a bipartisan effort. Everything else is the fault of bleeding heart liberals. The ACLU is prima facie of the current state of liberal thinking.

You left out the part about Mary getting knocked up by Johnny after fixing Johnny's knee, then divorcing her husband and marrying Johnny after her prison sentence is completed.

I disagree. The major source of this non-sense is the (intellectually vacant) liberal ideas of fair play, equality, and child safety.

That's not to say that conservatives haven't had a hand in this non-sense, just that liberals have played a bigger hand.

Again, I offer up the ACLU as prima facia.

I'll also point out that school teachers (and administrators) tend to be liberal more often than conservative. They play a major role in writing these "laws", if not interpreting them.

Everyone quit your whining. This is just evolution in motion. We're enjoying a greater level of freedoms now than we ever have in them good old days. We just have to deal with the with consequential damages. Sniveling is not an option

If you had the choice to live in the 50's era you would not take it.

It's the exact opposite actually. It's what we have now that we didn't have then.

I envy the innocence of that era.

Back then you didn't have some guy writing book after book on the "Dangers of soy." Or idiot after idiot pitching their theory on global warming. All you had to worry about back then is "Are there really UFO's?" and which chick you were gonna take to the corner store to share a malt with. We have enough shit to worry about without people creating conspiracy theories on everything. And that all boils down to how readily the information is available.

You might say: "Go a few weeks without the internet, you'll change your mind"
I haven't had the internet at my house for over 3 years. Just got it, but that's besides the point.

There tons more, like the music? I can only imagine growing up during the time when rock and roll was born, or when athletes were still "heroes".

I think we were all better off "not knowing."

As Hunter Thompson said "This is after all an aggressively Calvinist period. Let me offer my condolences to all of you in this generation who have to grow up, to live all your lives believing that sex is death, the rain is poison, now they have the sun can give you cancer...it isn't the laws that bother you so much...it's being chased around and scorned by your ex-peers, you have to run and scurry from place to place...I don't like to feel guilty, I don't really think I am"
HST - "People aren't beaten up anymore, I think Bush is right this is a kinder, gentler nation...a nation of sheep it's all been said before..."

    Things I would miss ...

    ... gotta have this
... all my home theater stuff and the quality of audio and vidio.
    ... thongs
... I'd still be wondering how to lift properly and suffering from injuries
    ... my PDA with gps
... times I spend with my son tearing it up
... doing 70mph from hole to hole as we go bass fishing
... Eva Mendez and Halle Berry... nuff said
... paintball is still a blast at 47. Something primal about shooting your kids legally.
... the internet and all it brings into my home

... none of these were something that I could get involved with yet

... society would not allow this kind of liberty. These voices would have been prohibited.
    ... radio was archaic
... our relationship with the world around us was in very low resolution in every aspect of the way we absorbed it.

Look at the imagery not with a materialistic mentality but with a societal perspective and with the humanistic symbolism I intended these images to present. Basically ... look under the hood.

The 50's was a very stifled time in American history. If you were of the drone mentality then the 50's were a great period to live, but if you were a free thinking person the 50's were a living nightmare. Freedom was very limited to what was considered appropriate by the Joneses and the McCarthys of the moment.

I'm from Cleveland so a Cleveland DJ named Alan Freed was one of my heroes. He was a singularity back then though ... not the norm or even part of the select crowd of cool people. 99.9% of America was more like Ralph Kramden than Freed. Listening to the edgy music of today is still nothing like listening to rock & roll of 50's. Odds are you would have been throwing rocks at the audiences instead of being in them. Most people here would would have listened to Patsy Kline not rock & roll.

Ethnic diversity in your choice of relationships did not exist. You hung with your own kind ... period. You HAD to be born white AND a man to have any real chance of upward mobility in 50's.

Polio, cancer, heart attacks, and even malaria in all likelihood a death sentence.

Okay...all of the 2006 ones are VERY exaggerated to the point of not being funny or considerable.

I would have loved the '50s, I'd have been a Beatnik hanging with Kerouac and crew toking, popping reds, easily accessing morphine, coke and driving cross country stealing gas from stations where the only person is asleep at the counter, easily finding odd jobs in each little town I came to, living on 5 dollars a day ,sleeping in any State Park along the way without some Park Ranger writing me a ticket for camping without a permit. I mean people these days have to have an RV or something to drive across America....Back then you could pile 5 or 6 friends into a car and just cruise America and not have to worry about stealing your shit from an unlocked car...Now days you need to have several thousand in gas money alone....

you're joking right? Ever hear the one about the teacher who grabbed a gangbanger for slapping a girl in the mouth and told the student to get out and the kid refused to leave the class? the teacher grabbed the kid and physically escorted him out. Well, the teacher is now unemployed. Exaggerated huh?

um....well, or 1956 - Mary is the high school girl knocked up by Johnny, a high school boy. Mary gets kicked out of school, shipped off to a "home for unwed mothers" forced to give the kid up to one of several local orphanages, the family shamed so she doesn't ever go back to school, and Johnny moves on with his life after being grounded for two weeks.

of course, by 1966 - Mary could have been the teacher, but if 14-year-old Johnny knocked her up, the teach could propose to Johnny, set up the wedding and get hitched right and proper to the young teen. All without Johnny's parents having any say.

Hahaha...you would have been hauled before Congress after being accused of bein' a communist, blacklisted so that your books wouldn't sell, and declared part of the vast liberal communist conspiracy plotting to destroy America from inside. . .

And that would come just from sleeping in a state park while lookin' like a beatnik....
