If you were deaf, would you want your children to be deaf too?

"At least a few parents with pronounced genetic abnormalities (e.g., deaf people, dwarfs) have in recent years sought specialized in-vitro fertilization that would improve their chances for a child with the same abnormalities, according to a December Associated Press report (citing a September survey by a Johns Hopkins University research facility). One adult female dwarf told the AP reporter defiantly, "You cannot tell me that I cannot have a child who's going to look like me.", extrapolating from the survey, posited that at least eight fertility clinics have provided the service, though many other clinics say they would decline."

Im hearing impared, have to wear two hearing aids to do my dailey activities. That is unless I don't want to hear what people are saying (yes that is very handy sometimes). There is no way in hell that I would want my daughter to have this problem. I was really upset when she started to get bad ear infections. Luckly that was taken care of and she can hear fine still.

Hearing people are left out of the normal world even thou they can fully function in most aspects of life. As a way to deal with people ignoring them they developed their own society of non hearing people where they all feel included. It is almost like the amish or any other group that says "fuck you" to the main population, "we will form our own club". I have worked with deaf people before, and I can tell you that it is a tough life. I applaud the fact that rather than letting it get them down and begging for people's sympathies, they take a "fuck you, I don't need you" attitude. It is a social phenomena.

Now, here comes the problem. These deaf people stick together and therefor develop a new society with its own rules and customs. When deaf people have kids, their worst nightmare is not being part of their children's lives because of the hearing / non hearing divide. Unless you are deaf or are close to someone who is deaf, you wouldn't understand the problem. Deaf people seem to function happily within their own group, and live healthy successful lives. Would a child who is born deaf have a bad life? I don't think so as long as they had loving intelligent parents. Is it wrong for deaf parents to want their child be brought up in a culture that they are very adapted to? I don't think so.

Way too many parents suck at being parents anyway to point the finger at deaf people for wanting their child to be brought up in an environment that the parents are already familiar with. Leave the people alone.

    No
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012
