You could call around to a couple of painters and pretend to be a customer to get more information. How do they charge and how much do they charge, how many people do they have working at one time, turnaround time, what kind of paint they will be using, etc..
I have heard the type of paint you have used will vary the price charged drastically. So if you use high-end paint (Sherwin-Williams), you would have to make your pitch toward quality. If you use mid-level paint (Home Depot, Menards), you can go for the value for quality pitch. Low-end paint (Wal-Mart), go for cost only approach. It would depend on your customer.

Day laborers have this cornered.

I have painted a few houses and I will never do another. The pay is not worth the work.

I used to paint but I haven't touched a canvas in years, I should go buy some brushes and start making my own organic pigments or buy some...
I love painting, can't draw but I can paint pretty good...

but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012
I havn't been on line much because we have been painting the gym and some of our other company properties and it has been a pain in the ass.I remember the last time we done this I was just a company pee on then and my painting was horrible and I didn't think I would ever be asked to paint again. Now I am in charge and get stuck with a painting crew and hate it even more.BORING as hell and it seems like it never ends. Not hard work, just slow and dull.

a friend of mine does this for a living. i was his helper over 20 years ago. now he lives up here in the winter n paints homes on the coast, where the rich people live, from late spring to fall. i'm not sure of the business end how tos but he makes really good money, has a summer home on the coast now, n is kept busy. there's a foot of snow here n he's doing quotes already. he's in his 50's n it keeps him in good shape too. he told me the paint he uses is like $50 a gallon.
you should look for advice and examples online before you start. there's more to it than painting, sometimes just the prep time takes an enormous amount of work.
Q: I notice a fine powder residue on my hands if I rub the side of the house. Will painting over it solve the problem?
A: No. In fact if you do that, you will soon have paint peeling off, in sheets possibly, and need to hire someone to thoroughly remove the existing paint by scraping and sanding, re-prime and re-paint at much greater expense than if you treat the problems correctly now.
This condition is called chalking, which is caused by inferior paint, improper use of interior paint outdoors, or failure to properly prime and seal the porous surfaces before painting. It's a good idea to pressure-wash the entire house, and if chalking remains, prime with a quality oil-base or acrylic latex primer, and repaint with a top quality paint, made with acrylic binders for proper adhesion.
Q: The three bids I have collected on repainting my house vary a lot in price. How do I determine which painter to choose?
A: The most important element in a paint job is the preparation, followed by the quality of paint. In the previous example, the cost a reputable licensed painting contractor would have to charge to properly treat the "chalking" surface, primer coat, and paint with special products would be higher than someone who just quoted a price to paint over the problems with standard paint.
That's why it is important to consider the true value of the job you will be paying for rather than choosing by price alone. Make sure you walk your property with each contractor, discuss what needs to be done and why, and include everything, including warranties, in the written contract. If a cheaper price means the painter is skipping things like proper preparation before painting, thorough caulking around all windows, care of your landscaping, etc., you are hardly saving money!
