    dvr question

Just a question for anyone that knows about DVR or TIVO. Right now I download all of my movies and save them to an external harddrive. I'm having a ton of trouble finding hi definition movies, though. Can I get tivo or DVR and record a high definition movie or show, then transfer that to my external harddrive and watch it on my computer? I use a large LCD tv as a monitor.
    Thanks

there are not that many channels that are in HD, its kind of hard to explain and you may already know this, but only a handful of stations and shows even broadcast in HD at the moment

that is my guess as to why it is hard to find shows that are in HD to download...

as for movies, the hd dvd players are so expensive right now that most people havent gotten them yet, and with the Blu Ray/HD dvd battle I think most might wait until there is only one around....I dont know that is just a guess...

    Hope it helped a little?

I have my DVR wired into my 32" Dell LCD same as my laptop. I can watch 720p off this laptop or 1080I off the DVR. Works great.

    What are your system spec's?

I only have a 2.8ghz pentium 4 with 1gb ram. Probably will upgrade this summer to something much faster, but just wanted to know how I would record 1080 movies or shows to my computer. I read on a different forum that people were having trouble connecting the dvr to their computer because its not setup for it. Would I need a special "hdtv" card to record to my computer? thanks for the information.

Most DVR's have copyright protection that prevents the transfer of stored media from the DVR to an another device like your PC ... and hacking into them will void your warranty IF the cable company finds out.

A killer video card will pull off the 1080i format that your cable company broadcasts their HD shows in. If you cannot wait then that would be the upgrade to make. If you don't get one than you're prolly wasting your time trying to move your HD media to the comp.

If a few hundred bucks is doable than here's a couple cards from www.TigerDirect.com. From my experiences ... I've bought several things from them ... I like doing business with Tiger. Don't bother with a 128mb card with your system specs. A 256 or even better a 512 with HDMI outs and that specifically states that it handles HDTV is what would work on your system. You can prolly move the card to your next system too so it wouldn't be a bad investment ...

    Enjoy ...

Bone crusher, I have the "HIS Radeon X1650 Pro IceQ 512mb AGP" video card. I believe the box said "HDTV" for one of the inputs.. is this card one that can record the high def programs straight from a cable box from comcast? The connection on it looks just like an S video type cable.
