I can't believe people still smoke...

Why would anyone still smoke? Whenever I'm out and see a hot girl smoking I always think what a shame. And when I see an obese person smoking I think, it double sucks to be you. When I see young kids I think, I was stupid once too. Then there is the old people who look like they truly have given up- like my Aunt who smoked on her death- I can't even think about her without a cigarette in her mouth.

I know it's an addiction but what is the upside to smoking- it's expensive, it's carcinogenic, it makes you stink, your teath and fingers turn yellow, the wheezing when doing anything cardiovascular, it weakens your immune system... etc. etc.

It's an addiction. Yeah it smells and yeah it tastes bad and yeah it's a disgusting habit but it is an addiction many people have a hard time giving up because of it's convenience and habits. Take it from an ex-smoker.....it's easier said than done.

Nicotine itself is a powerful drug and when used wisely it is great for smoking cessation, appetite suppressant, anxiety, Alzheimer's, Schizophrenia

So long as their are people weak-willed enough to give into peer pressure, there'll be smokers.

I know it's tough to quit- I used to smoke too- I'm just saying that it is proven to cause so many problems and yet people still continue to smoke. In some age groups (teens) people are smoking more than ever.

There is a big differnce between a cigarette and nicotine- nicotine itself isn't half as bad as all the crap they add to a commercial cigarette.

The difference is a few drinks in moderation is not such a bad thing- your liver can handle it- (especially during the playoffs) but even a little bit of smoking stays inside your body and can start to damage your lungs.

I hate the god damned smell of smokers.

I also get pissed when I am walking to class and I got a bunch of people smoking in front of me.

Or when I walk outside my dorm and there is a load of people puffing on cigarettes I have to walk through right at the door when it clearly states stand atleast 20 feet away from the building and all windows...

This is why I absolutely hate smoking. It's the smell and the second hand smoke.

Looks like we both are in the same boat this year both our teams didn't make it to the playoffs. If Edmonton can't win I want Vancouver to...but I think of all the Canadian teams Ottawa is the most likely to take it.

Screw all of you. Everything you do is fucking bad for you, I don't give a shit what it is. So taking tons of supps, steroids, hgh, etc...Is that shit good for you? Fuck no it's not, in fact I bet it's probably worse for you then smoking. Yeah, I understand it stinks but it smells better then the asshole who just got out of the gym and didn't shower and it definitely smells better then the jerkoff who drinks 27 protein shakes a day and can't not fart every 30 seconds.

    Bitter much?

You're comparing steroid use to sucking on a chemical filled burning piece of shit?

Listen, unless someone put a gun to your head and made you take a drag, you've got no one to blame for your smoking addiction but yourself.

And there is no such thing as second hand steroids. And BO won't give you cancer.

Vices are vices, people search for ways to suppress stress and for many it comes as a plant wrapped in thin paper, and then there are those who smoke that useless plant wrapped in paper with a little filter on the end and then there are some who load hundreds of pounds of steel on their shoulders a few times a week and then wonder why it hurts if they lift their arm above their head, yet the do the same thing next week and end up needing surgery or folks like me who think hey I can deadlift a Mini Cooper so I should be able to lug these 5 Slot Machines we bought as christmas presents 200 yards because some asshole parked in front of our house and then a twinge in your back says "Man maybe you should take it easy, but no I have muskles to upkeep so I hit the iron the next day, then I go to GF's grandfathers home and lift his 110lb body out of bed at least 4 times a day so he can eat, shit and shower and next thing I know I'm living on Vicodin, Percocets, Valium, and finally Lyrica, Klonopin and Methadone for 2 years with no hope of recovering....because I though nothing like this could ever happen to me....same as them...

I understand hurting yourself with supps and shit doesn't affect anyone else, but do you really believe that second hand smoke can really give someone cancer? I mean come on. I suppose that a 50 year old man who worked as a plumber inhaling dangerous fumes and dust for 30 years but never smoked a cigarette in his life could blame his newly found lung cancer on second hand smoke? Hell no, but I bet you most would. Thats the thing, just because you don't smoke doesn't mean the only way you're gonna get lung cancer is because others around you do. Nobody ever looks at what their job consisted of or even the family history, it's amazing how much genetics affect what type of diseases or types of cancer you could end up with. Unless you're locked in a room with 10 smokers for your entire life I think the second hand smoke thing is BS.

And I disagree with that BO comment. I've caught a wiff of some pretty stanky people and I'm pretty sure it cost me a few years off my life.

I don't judge because I know what it's like to be in their shoes. I quit a long time ago and I still use some form of nicotine like the lozenges. I have to........so many people smoke around me and out of fear of regression, I stay addicted to nicotine, albeit a very small amount.......

You can't sit there an say "why do people do this when they know it's going to kill them?" There are a lot of risks we take everyday with the possibility of death luring over our heads. Why drive when your chances of dying in a car accident are greater than your chances of dying from smoking? As Iain said, why do people eat processed foods, or become alcoholics or constant recreational drug users? People do what they want to do and they always will. If someone wants to change is because THEY want it, not because of the risks of sacrificing their health and well being.

I have a very addictive personality- I like excess- I tend to go overboard with things anything really- so I do understand that it's harder for some people than others. How people smoke one or two cigarettes a day or just when they go drinking is something I can not understand. I think a lot of addictions have to to with filling a void inside yourself or using your addictions from preventing yourself from looking at something that you are afraid of addressing. A truly healthy person does not need a vice to feel complete.

I smoked because the smoking helped with anxiety. I refused to smoke has a kid and teen because I was always involved in athletics. I started smoking the day of final exams when I was 20 years old. I was talking to a female friend of mine and she could tell I was freaking out. she told me that I needed a cigarette, so I told her I don't smoke. She said "no, you really need a cigarette, it will calm you down". Well I took one from her and lit up. Would you believe that I did in fact make me feel better. Go fucking figure. So I turned into a smoker. I smoekd for the next 4 years until last may when I quit.

The tough part is that I haven't smoked for over a year, but I am still a smoker. I still get the cravings when I get stressed out. If I drink I have to smoke. It is like a need that must be filled more so than any other impulse I have. Maybe after a few more years the urge will go away, but I still got a ways to go before that happens.

As far as the upsides you asked:
    1. They speed of digestion and makes a meal go down faster so yo udon't feel bloated.
    2. Few things on this earth are as enjoyable as that first cigarette of the day with your morning coffee.
    3. A cigarette after sex is the cherry on the cake.
    4. Girls that smoke often poke. Kissing a girl that smokes isn't bad when you smoke too, so that leaves the women that like to fuck to the smokers.
    5. Smoking gives you something to do when you get bored.
    6. Smoking calms you down when you get pissed off.

Smoking has died out some. However, like bakerboy, if I notice a hot girl smoking, I immediately think shes not worth talking to (or maybe its a reason to cover up the chicken shitness).

As far as comrads go, I kinda dont care if they smoke. If I lived with a smoker, then I could see some 'accidental' times that invoke arguments.

I actually dont mind the smell that much, but I do on clothes, hands, hair, never the smoke itself. Then again, I am never right there in front of it. People dont make a habit of blowing it in my face, however, in bars that doesnt have to happen. By then its not the smell that gets me, its the smoke itself. I dont like my eyes burning like Ive been swimming in pure chlorine for an hour.

Its the dating world where I despise and hate cigarettes. Seriously, if you have a significant other who doesnt smoke, you have to know its almost as bad as having body odor. You wouldnt spray yourself with a shit scented fragrance to attract the opposite sex, so why would you smoke? Everything fucking STINKS. I dont care how hot a girl is, if she stinks, I cant touch her.

Brush your teeth or chew gum? Ill still taste.
Try harder, but this time with Listerine? Ill smell it through your nose. (remember, you have to breathe during kissin)
Whats left? Wash your fucking hands, try gasoline.
Use the gas to torch your hair, cuz that reeks too.
Oh did I make you laugh? Well, fuck off, cuz I dont want to see yellow, green, or GRAY painted teeth.
Time to toss your clothes too cuz thats not Bounty I smell.
Then theres the famous excuse: "I only smoke when I drink." Ok. Do us all a favor, drink a shitload, then drive home. Make sure the bar is about an hour away.
Dont forget to inhale the fucking flakes of ashes that I KNOW are in your fucking car in the hardest to clean places.

Bottom line is if someone wants to smoke, have at it. But dont do so around me and my little girls. I get very irritated whenever I go to a sit down place to eat and someone walks in and lights up. I think you have to be kidding me your fuckin ass just came inside and you didnt just smoke in your car a whole 30 seconds ago! Please. Theres a time and place and if someone wants to, then thats fine. But have respect for others. Oh and to be honest I think I would rather smell a protein fart, shit atleast its not harming me, the shit only stinks!

Driving gets you around; smoking makes you smell bad.

All of life is a trade off between what you want and safety. Some of the risks like driving, sex, and colarically rich foods are worthwhile and serve a real, viable, purpose. The same cannot be said of smoking and drug use.
