Project Management Professional certification
I delted my question real quick since I saw it on the tab below.
I have not taken the PMP exam however some of the folks where work are going to be required to take it. I have had the classes and found that the Pmbok is not universally accepted in terminology. Most of private industry does not give near as much value to a PMP certification. They did about 10 years ago and it was all the rage. Bottom line for a PM is experience, not if you know the Pmbok forwards and backwards. I feel the PMP is a self serving process for the company that runs the certification program. Oh, and how do I know it is no longer much value, the Federal Gov't is considering mandating all of it's PMs to be PMP certified in a few years.
I will sum it up by saying, all those I know who have PMPs, passed the test by attending one of those weekend crash courses just before the test, and none have failed on the first try.

Thanks PhredYeah, I've been studying the PMBOK. It's not very entertaining :zzzz: Their guidelines are so different from what I do at work so it's like learning something new. I'm sure after I take the test, I'll forget all about it
Unfortunately, in order for me to take the next step in my career I need to be a PMP.![]()
I do not feel it is a total waste. It does establish a standard level of understanding. However, only the basic stuff applied to me (I was an PM for HTRW remediation on military installations). Like you are finding out, it does not always tranlsate well to all areas. When you start trying to explain earned value to the folks performing the work their eyes will just glaze over. Then take their beer money.

It won't be a waste because then I get my next career move
I've been a PM for a while now but yeah, their standards definately don't translate to the "real life" standards.
No Milk, no.
