Farewell Falwell ... still unconscious without a pulse.

I thought that was kind of a strange way to report the man's death ... "Found yesterday laying on the floor unconscious without a pulse" ... that would be phrased "FOUND DEAD" for us normal people.

I'm not a fan of this man and am glad he will no longer be trying to twist politics to his turbo Christian perspective. If you ARE a Falwell fan you might want to go read another post as this is a collection of some of Falwell's bullshit ... you may be offended. I invite any and all criticism.

    Falwellian quips:

"AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals."

    -------------------------------------------------

"The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country."

    -------------------------------------------------

"Grown men should not be having sex with prostitutes unless they are married to them."

    -------------------------------------------------

"I do not believe the homosexual community deserves minority status. One's misbehavior does not qualify him or her for minority status. Blacks, Hispanics, women, etc., are God-ordained minorities who do indeed deserve minority status."

    -------------------------------------------------

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen."
... meaning he blamed all these people for the events of 9/11 as a punishment from God.

    -------------------------------------------------

    Falwellian contribtions:

October 1987: The Federal Election Commission fines Falwell $6,000 for transferring $6.7 million in funds intended for his ministry to political committees.

    -------------------------------------------------

    1991:
Stephens Inc., a Savings and Loan institution from Arkansas forecloses the North Campus of Liberty University, which Falwell had put up as collateral on $72.3 million. Falwell was also involved in the eventual failure of the Lincoln Savings and Loan of California, after borrowing $32 million. The deed to Thomas Road Baptist Church was recovered from their vault and returned.

    -------------------------------------------------

February 1993:The Internal Revenue Service determines that funds from Falwell’s Old Time Gospel Hour program were illegally funneled to a political action committee. The IRS forced Falwell to pay $50,000 and retroactively revoked the Old Time Gospel Hour’s tax-exempt status for 1986-87.

    -------------------------------------------------

1994-1995: Falwell is criticized for using his "Old Time Gospel Hour" to hawk a scurrilous video called "The Clinton Chronicles" that makes a number of unsubstantiated charges against President Bill Clinton—among them that he is a drug addict and that he arranged the murders of political enemies in Arkansas. Despite claims he had no ties to the project, evidence surfaced that Falwell helped bankroll the venture with $200,000 paid to a group called Citizens for Honest Government (CHG). CHG’s Pat Matrisciana later admitted that Falwell and he staged an infomercial interview promoting the video in which a silhouetted reporter said his life was in danger for investigating Clinton. (Matrisciana himself posed as the reporter.) "That was Jerry’s idea to do that," Matrisciana recalled. "He thought that would be dramatic."

I was never a big Falwell fan. I thought he was careless and insensitive with many of his remarks. Just b/c something is "true" doesn't make it always OK to say. Therefore, he was always making himself and other Christians looks bad. He never considered how his remarks would look when isolated in a sound bite, like was done above.

With that said, I think it is a bit pitiful how much people hated him and seem happy he died. I think that says more about them than Falwell.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I did not like Falwell because he was not a good person. He was a politician. We was a lier, a cheat, and a fake. I can also provide sources to back-up all of these claims, but I would be wasting my time. Either you like the man or you don't, and nothing I can say will change that now.

I'm not happy about his death, but I am overjoyed that that particular stream of bullshit stopped. Would love for Ann Coutler not to ever speak in public again too.

Falwell always seemed to struggle with the "love your neighbor" parts of the Bible.

I guess you missed the bit about me not being a Falwell fan.

I was simply explaining my reasons for why I think it is good that he is dead. He was hurting America. I am not trying to start an argument, and I am not pointing fingers at anyone. If you liked the guy then great. If you don't like the guy, then great also.

Yeah, I hold no contempt against the man just his ideologies and blowhardedness....

As I posted in the other Falwell thread even Larry Flynt was kind in his remarks on the mans death....

no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

    Here 'tis:
The Reverend Jerry Falwell and I were arch enemies for fifteen years. We became involved in a lawsuit concerning First Amendment rights and Hustler magazine. Without question, this was my most important battle - the l988 Hustler Magazine, Inc., v. Jerry Falwell case, where after millions of dollars and much deliberation, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in my favor.

My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling.

The most important result of our relationship was the landmark decision from the Supreme Court that made parody protected speech, and the fact that much of what we see on television and hear on the radio today is a direct result of my having won that now famous case which Falwell played such an important role in.
