Forget books and shit. Go get you a hacked copy of dreamwever and just go to town. Thats what I did. If I ever had a question about html, I just goggled it. I took a website production class and a website server management class and I didn't buy a book for either class. Google is your best friend when learning html. The internet could help you learn how to do more with the internet. It is a relationship forged in steel. also go online and look up the dreamweever documentation. I really hate how macromedia products are always so fucking different from the standard Microsoft style user interface. They just had to be different. Then figuring out how to use the shit is like learning a new language, its a pain in the ass. But, its worth it. I have about 2 or 3 websites that were bad ass but I never actually got the site onto the server. Ow well, fuck it.

HTML is easy. Dont bother buying fancy books. There are plenty of free tutorials online. Just google them. A basic HTML site can even be done in notepad. Though a web development tool would make things a lot easier and faster. I suggest learn to do most by hand at first and get accustomed to what the code looks like and does.

Depends on what kind of website you want to built. Now adays, javascript is almost just as important as html in a website so make sure to check those out .

Best source of learning programming is ebooks. Look for them in sites and they are really good too

HTML and CSS need to be learned together from the outset in my opinion. Modern web design is accomplished by using HTML to provide the shell, and CSS style sheets for the styling.

Shit like <body bgcolor= or <font> tags are irrelevant now. CSS will not only condense your code, but also save you a lot of pain in the long run.

I agree a 100%. CSS is very important.

As far as javascript goes, I say don't worry about it yet. I can not stand going to an site where you can just tell somebody is learning javascript and they have all sorts of unnecessary shit happening in their page.

I dunno, as far as HTML goes i got one book out of the library and pretty much got the basics. Then again, all my websites suck :P.

    http://bobtheblock.comicgenesis.com/

Is probably the only decent one really.

HTML is easy and you can pretty much get it from a book in a weekend. PHP and CSS and other bits of code, and getting HTML up to the current standard...well, that takes a little more work.

I agree though, anything you can get from a book is more than likely available through googling it.

Go to the bittorrent site of your choice and search for "Lynda.com". These are great tutorials.

Or, if you're feeling frisky, you could actually pay for them.

best advice from bulkmeup and everyone else who is suggesting this.

This is how i learned back in 1996. and now everything is so much easier too, and there is so much more information available for free all over the web.

get yourself a copy of dreamweaver (how you get it, i don't care)
learn the HTML basics by hand.
learn some basic CSS (cascading style sheets)

Once you have all taht, in dreamweaver, you can switch back and forth between the VISUAL and the CODE - that way as you learn HTML you can see in real time what the code produces when you view it in a browser.

Well said. Lynda Com has video trainings of everything from basics to advanced. Even scripting such as PHP, javascript and much more.

Also based way to learn to make a website. Take those free layouts that have been already built an Edit them, customize them. Use those for your first couple of websites to give u a good head start.

When I used to build websites I was using Linux and doing it just by pure html, the notepad program I used even colored the text for different functions.....they should have a notepad program like that for Windows for free, look for HTML Editors.....the last website I built I used Frontpage because the client wanted me to so he could toy around with it himself easier in the future...
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

I believe the program you were using was called Gedit maybe. I also designed a website in Linux, and I think Gedit was the application that colored the text different so you knew what the code blocks were.

The tutorials aren't just skimpy little "how tos". They're full video and they come with the materials, too.

The teacher is always an expert in his field and not only shows you the basics, but also some professional time saving tips.

The .Com is simply a domain name for the original host itself.

The original website address could be; http://68.15.254.102 or a subdomain for that matter, then if you have a domain you can simply mask the ip address with DNS settings and have it to http://mydomain.com to redirect to that other domain name.

If you can find any place to get lynda.com tutorials, go to mininova.org there are Tons and tons. Download the torrent, extract, click on Windowsmode.exe and follow along they even have exercise files for you to study off.

    Everything you need to know:
    W3Schools Online Web Tutorials

Start out with basic HTML, write clean code and validate it. Practice good information architecture and design. After a few months include CSS into your coding/design.
