Hmmmmmm Well.... if it's completely fucked I usually try this as a last resort....

If the old HD contains data I absolutely cannot lose I usually remove it. I then install another HD and reinstall windows. After a complete install I'll hook the old HD back into the system as a 'slave drive' so I can at least take a look at the contents and (hopefully) recover any data I want to preserve.

If data isn't an issue... fuck it. Throw in the restoration disc and let it fly.

Does your computer have any programs that your dad uses?
Do you have the OS CD and the drivers CD?
If you don't have drivers CD, do you have a dell?
You know what, just tell me everything about the computer that seems important, and I'll try to help you out.

More importantly, you are 15. Just tell your dad that you messed up the computer, and if there are no programs to save, we can walk through a clean install. Then again, if your dad is like mine, I didn't tell my dad shit. He wouldn't do anything but bitch anyway, so I just let shit be.

I have never heard of f10 formatting the disc. Calm down. You aren't making much sense here.

I'm guessing your filesystem is NTFS based, so don't worry - there are tons of recovery programs out there.

Google search for Hiren's BootCD 9.1 and check out some of the recovery tools on there - at the very least, you'll recover all data and just need to reinstall the OS and programs.

It also sounds like you have spyware or viruses that affected the WinLogon process, so they load in both normal and safe mode. You could *try* removing some of it from the registry manually through some of those tools, but I would heavily advise against it unless you are absolutely sure you know what you're doing.

In that case, you are probably screwed. Tell your dad asap, because he will probably have to have it carried to a professional.

Or you could buy another hardrive and do what Witmaster suggested.

He's not screwed at all - he just needs to use some of the tools on the recovery CD I posted about. The only deal is you need somewhere to move the files TO, but that can be a second HD, USB flash, or even another computer via a network if need be.

Just do an in-place re-install if the restore doesn't work.

Ok, I'm going to shower real quick and I'll check back before going to sleep, but give this a shot:

Get to the task manager, click on File --> New Task (Run).. and type in explorer. That should force the desktop to hopefully load, and then you can retrieve the BootCD, burn it, and boot into it. If that doesn't work, then we can also run 'cmd' to get to a command prompt and try some things.

I would NOT trust their recovery program except as a last resort. I never trust any of those companies to do anything right, nor do I actually trust random techs (ironic saying that as I give this advice)

ok guys i got firefox to run! I just ran firefox.exe using the task manager, when I tried to run explorer, the desktop just flashes for about 2 seconds. I think the exe that is fucking up my pc is wscntfy.exe.

EDIT: OK i guess wscntfy.exe isn't the harmful program because I just googled it, and this is what i got this
""wscntfy.exe" is the Windows Security Center, introduced in Service Pack 2. It displays a tray icon indicating the status of updates, virus protection, and firewall.

wscntfy.exe can be disabled by going in to "Services" and disabling Security Center (not recommented).

Note: The wscntfy.exe file is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32. In other cases, wscntfy.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm! Check this with Security Task Manager."

read the last paragraph, confused... heres the site i got that from wscntfy.exe Windows process - What is it?

Since you can get to firefox, go to Free Software Downloads and Software Reviews - Download.com and download and install AdAware and Spybot - they're the first results for those terms I think. Run those for now, it might take some toying around to get them to start. They should get you on your way to running again.

I wouldn't mind helping you via AIM, but that will have to wait until tomorrow if you are still having a problem. Work in 7 hours, and I'm goddamn beat from spending 3 hours in the gym today - meant to play racquetball for 45min, ended up playing for 2h30m

If you need it, just leave me a message. I do most of my work on servers remotely, so I can help you in the background while I'm doing other stuff at work.

*Forgot to mention, be sure to update those programs if at all possible. The updates will help quite a lot with removing spyware. They should be able to remove enough to get you running again (hopefully), then we can work on cleaning it up more thoroughly.

I installed, and scanned with webroot spyweeper, everything seems to be fine now! I am still worried that something like this is going to happen again, so can someone reccomend the best anti-virus, spyware, adaware program.

    Free or pay?
If pay: Kaspersky or Nod32 are good ones
free: Avast32 or AVG works well.
Online: Panda, Trend Micro are pretty good.

for spyware, you were given the best options: adaware and spybot. Actually Windows Defender ain't bad either.

Well there is HijackThis, but I would want the logs of that sent to me since you are unsure of what you are doing. It's more of an advanced program, and you can fuck up your computer if you remove the wrong entries - not all of them are bad.

Delete all temporary files out of C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ and C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Local Settings\Temp and C:\Windows\temp. Check Add/Remove programs to see if some of those bullshit programs have uninstallers that work (MyWay Search bar, etc.) and remove them, especially the search bar crap.

AVG Anti-Virus is a very good free anti-virus program, it's what I use when I'm working on someone's comp and they let their anti-virus subscriptions lapse.

I keep running the spyware one and finding about 10-20 infected files, and I delete them, but every time I scan again athere is just more?!!?
