I'm an avid Howard Stern fan listener and I was completely taken aback by what one of his guests had to say about the band Led Zeppelin.

Blasphemy!!!
NONE of the original inspirations for the Led Zeppelin releases were anywhere near as good.
I'm just gonna put my fingers in ears and go NANANANANAANAN 'til this all goes away![]()
Yeah but where does it all stop? Who inspired the "originals"? Bach? Know what i mean? A word for word cover needs to be made known as a cover ... or rendition er w/e. A lot of that was a big stretch to say this part is from here and that part is from there.
I'm sticking my fingers back in my ears again ... NANANANANANANANA![]()

“I used to do drugs. I still do drugs. But I used to, too.”

If the people who wrote the originals wanna step forward and play them as good as Led Zeppelin did then let's have it.....
Most of those bands around that time from England were ripping stuff from african-american blues artists, you think any of them would've come out with blues chops like they had without playing someone elses stuff over and over again? Why do you think Clapton and Townsend were awed when they saw Jimi playing for the first time?

Man, you guys are young aren't you. Wish I was.
Howard Stern is an ass. It has always been a known fact that bands like The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, featuring legendary guitarists Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and even the Beatles, IDOLIZED American blues of the 40s and 50s before they were famous. Willie Dixon, Albert King, T-Bone Walker, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, etc.
They never hid that, and openly talked about those influences in interviews. On Led Zep's first, it clearly displayed who wrote the song right on the record. It list's the song title, length of track, and the song writer.

You could make this case for tons of bands though. Let's not just pick on the most popular. Everyone has influences and everyone "steals" something from their favorite artists.
Off the top of my head I can think of one. One of my favorite bands is Sublime. A song on the album "Robbin the Hood" called "Work that we do" has the same bass line as Bob Marley's "Crazy Baldheads." I was fuckin crushed when I figured that out, but I then realized that all bands do it to some degree and it's their styles that make it "theirs." There is so much more to the creative process than just "borrowing" a melody (or a bass line) and sure I as hell won't look at Led Zeppelin differently.
Zeppelin ROCKS.
Ahhhh grasshopper. Read the part about the source of the article. Stern is an asshole and a media whore. He HAS to create something to talk about so he can then meet his required marketing plan. So he picks up someting like this and runs with it. Think of Stern as nothing more than a verbal national inquirer. Stern is 6 lb's of shit in a 2 pound bag. Always has been.
I remember in High Times when they did a spread about John Bohnum's death (sic) and there was discussion about the influences of the band members. They talked about the people and songs that had been the driving forces behind the music of Led Zeppelin. The list was pretty interesting to me at the time.
I usually agree with you on most matters, but in this case...fuck off. The guy who came on the show is a very reputable classic rock expert and trust me, all the personalities on the show were very disappointed when they heard this shit about zeppelin. Like Sox said before, it's not really a big deal to make other peoples music yours, as long as you give them credit for actually writing the song. Zeppelin didn't do that with there first album, why I don't know but it kinda makes em look shitty. I still love zeppelin and think they are one of the best bands ever, I'm just a little disappointed.
I drive a big truck

I'd think under all the drugs and with women dropping at their feet the guys of Led Zeppelin didn't even give a shit whose names were accredited to the songs, especially on the first album...

Awesome self restraint BC.
I've done a little digging and found that Jimmy Page was the most responsible. Ok, so at that time they were a group of 17 something musicians looking to hit the big time. Page used riffs, melodies and lyrics that inspired him. Who the hell cares? They were basically an unknown British bar band. But then when they hit it big, Jimmy never gave the credit to whom it was due. That was wrong, but....
Have you guys even HEARD of Willie Dixon or Albert Collins? They were both good, but no where near the experience of Led Zep ROCKING a sold out hall. I personally am a huge fan of Muddy Waters, so I can understand his displeasure. For those of you who are actually blues fans, get this Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live [Deluxe Edition] - Muddy Waters Music - Yahoo! Shopping
Muddy was 68 and did this comeback performance. Simply awesome IMO. Listen to the teasers, I think you'll see what I mean.
Can I add this here? Talking about white boy blues guitarist.... here is the greatest.
Maybe I'm not talking out of my ass. Maybe I'm just not right this time. It could happen ...
I haven't seen the show because I ignore Stern. I guess you have though and know better than I do if the people on the show were credible. None the less, I'd save the "talking out the ass" insults for something a little more worthy than my previous post. You never know, a guy might take something like that personal.
I might add that though I may be wrong about this topic ... I'm right about Stern. He's pure entertainment, nothing more.
All I have to say is, my aunty saw Robert Plant in concert about a year ago, and he's now a fat old man with bitch titties....an improvement from his skrawny bitch look.
You know, the Nazis had pieces of flair that they made the Jews wear.
