Center seeks volunteers for beer-tasting festival By ACADIANA BUREAU Published: Jul 6, 2007 - Page: 1B -- Acadiana Edition LAFAYETTE — If free beer’s your thing, you’re in luck. The Acadiana Center for the Arts is looking for volunteers to help staff the inaugural Gulf Brew beer-tasting festival, to be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. July 14 in downtown Lafayette. The festival features samples from breweries across the Gulf South, as well as activities for children. In exchange for working a two-hour shift, volunteers — ages 21 or older — will get one “Taster Ticket” good for 15 three-ounce samples from the participating breweries. Volunteers also get free draft beer at the end of their shift. Gulf Brew is modeled in the style of Germany’s Oktoberfest. Participating breweries include Saint Arnold Brewing Co. of Houston; Lazy Magnolia Brewing Co., Kiln, Miss.; Abita Brewing Co., Abita Springs; and Zea Brewery, Metairie. Lafayette’s own beer-brewing club, the Dead Yeast Society, will participate. Budweiser draft products will be served. Besides the brew, patrons can enjoy sausage po-boys, live music from the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars, door prizes and the chance to win a trip to Oktoberfest 2007 in New York City. Children 12 and under can sample and learn about Barq’s root beer and get grilled hot dogs. The $15 admission gets a “Taster Ticket” good for 15 three-ounce samples of beer. Admission for non-tasters or those under 21 is $10. Admission for children 12 and under is free. Proceeds benefit the Acadiana Arts Council. The Gulf Brew festival is being held in conjunction with the Southern Open 2007 exhibition, featuring Southern artists from Texas to Florida. The festival ends at 6 p.m., followed by a two-hour closing reception of the Southern Open 2007 exhibition. The Second Saturday ArtWalk will be held that night. To volunteer, e-mail or call Bree at bree@acadianaartscouncil.org or (337) 233-7060. For tickets or information, call the Acadiana Center for the Arts at the same phone number, e-mail info@acadianaartscouncil.org or visit the Web at http://www. acadianacenterforthearts.org /gulfbrew. |
