    anyone here into fishing?

I don't get out often but my grandparents have a nice man-made pond on there farmland and they keep it stocked with mostly bluegills/catfish/and some bass

I would love to get out there and fish more than I do, always a blast as a campsite as well

anyways Im looking to pick up a good rod and reel on Ebay but I don't want to spend a whole lot since I don't really know what Im looking for in the first place...

    any help?

also the city I live in is on the Mississippi River and I can get a lot of fishing done there too

so for freshwater fishing, and mostly small/medium game fish, what should I look for in a rod and reel?

it doesnt seem that easy though

    after doing some research...

    different rods and reels, saltwater/freshwater

    spinning/spin cat/baitcast reel

    light/medium/heavy

    trigger

blah, all this is pretty foreign to me

I think I have found out a lot of what I need to know, but itd be easy to just get a straight answer

Just get a rod, a spinning reel some 8lb test line, some hooks, and some leeches. Game set match.

Fishing is as old as time. You can have all the technology in the world but it really all boils down to patience, a rod, a reel and some appropriate bait.

I have pretty much the same setup.
I still like minnows or nightcrawlers. Leeches are so hit and miss for me (but that's part of the fun I guess).

Spoons and Canadian Wigglers work too where I fish.

I'm just gonna come out and say it. Fishing is a fucking miserable hobby. I live in the "fishing" state and I can proudly say I've been fishing twice in all of my 27 years. Jesus Christ fishing sucks.

At the low price range you're in you really only have one of two choices. There are other cheap rod/reel combos but they all suck. The gears strip out, the drag gets goofy on a big fish, or they don't consistently cast and retrieve smoothly. Last thing you wanna do when you go fishing is fight with your gear. Get something that looks good AND will not let you down.

    ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Reel (eBay) ... zebco omega z02 or the omega z03. This family of reels are the best reel you will find for someone that doesn't have a lot of experience. No backlash, no rats nests, and you cannot break these suckers. I still use one on light tackle and I own a bass boat. That reel will haul in anything you can set a hook on, then beg for more. Besides the steel gears and bearing drive, with this reel you can change spools. Bass pro-shops rod/reel combo @ $75.

    ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Bass pro-shops has this zebco 33 rod & reel combo tha'll work for $37 + shipping. Basically the same reel design, but the omega is the top of the line for this series. I would not use anything of a lower quality than this though or you'll loose fish.

    ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Wal-Mart has the best deal on worms, but ya gotta keep 'em on ice or they melt. My son used my truck to go fishing and left a tub of worms behind my seat. By the time I got in it smelled like I was hauling a dead body around with me. He thought that was funny ...

If you wanna catch something just for fun that will fight like hell take a box of total and a jug of water out with ya. Make lil dough balls about the size of a large seeded grape and wrap 'em around a small treble hook. No weights ... just toss it out there and keep a hold of your pole or it will be gone. This will be a catch and release fish, if you get it in that is

You'll need a knot that's easy and strong. Polomer knot works well:

To tie a polomer knot, double (fold) your line and put it through the eye of your lure. Then take the folded end and go over and back under the other lines and grab the folded end. Now, put your lure completely through the loop you just made. Then pull the tag end of the line to take out the excess. Now wet the knot (spit works) then hold the lure and pull the line to tighten it. Cut off the excess to about 1/8th" - 1/4" and you should have a good polomer knot.

Good luck and try not to miss too much work or school from fishing. But do miss a little

Get a medium light rod with a spinning reel. 8lb test is fine for pond fishing. You can get a nice rod and reel for around 120. I spent 170 on mine. I got a nice reel though.

I posted the best quality for the money. I'm with you Double, but for the price/quality check my earlier post, Fetus. I own 24 rods and 27 reels. Each has it's use. I am the Master Baiter. If fetus wants to PM me to see what is the best choices in models of the items I suggest, I'll do that.

In your opinion hoglander ... how's that spinner gonna beat the spincast for a beginner?

So then he should use a spinner reel cuz you think he'll look retarded?

Like I said, I own a bass boat and still use one on light tackle. Only an asshole will think him a retard for running a spincast reel, and who cares what an asshole is gonna think of him? He'll learn just fine. The trick is to get him on the water with the least amount of problems starting out then let him progress.

I own more tackle than i can count and still enjoy the ease of use a spincast offers ... especially from the bank!!!!

Crusher, if you are stuck on the bank you need to cast far, in a boat not so much. Spincast IS NOT the best choice. A spinning reel is the right choice for bankies.

If you fish from a boat that way and no one can see you that's fine.

Thanks guys, I will look over some options, I feel confortable with a spinner or spincast, I dont think I have ever used a baitcast reel though, and I hear they can be a real rats nest even for veterans at times, so I think I wont bother with those, they seem to be the more expensive reels too from what I have seen, I havent seen any cheap ones

All you need is a big net and some weights on the ends or a stick of dynamite. I've heard if you put the leads of one of those old crank phones in the water it'll get you a few catches easily....

Baitcast reels are more for bay or surf fishing. Go with a spinning reel. Done.

i agree , if bass or larger, you gonna need to spend 100, even on ebay , but you'll be able to get your money back if you decide to give it up.....go to BBC , they have a sell forum , and you'll get some great advice as well
