Has Sony gone downhill, or do I just have bad luck?

I have been a Sony supporter since I was a young kid. My first CD player was a Sony Diskman that lasted 8 years. I dropped it off of my ATV going down the road at 20mph and it still didn't break. I owned a Sony playstation that still works after about 10 years. I own a ton of other Sony stuff that has lasted for a long time.

But in the last 5 or 6 years, my new Sony gadgets have sucked ass. My playstation 2 lasted for about a year and a half when the laser went bad. Every friend I know had the same type of problems. I bought a nice Sony cybershot a year ago, and it never has taken good pictures. I sent it back twice while it was under warranty, and the piece of shit still screws up over half of the time, usually on pictures that I really wanted to turn out well. The Sony PS3 was shipped even thou Sony new it had a malfunctioning processor chip in it. My Sony monitor just bit the dust after only a year and a half.

WTF! Do I have bad aura when it comes to electronics, or is Sony making crap now to boost their profits? Anybody else having problems with sony products?

I was the same as you, used to love sony. Had the discman that lasted for ever and my PS1 still works after ten years. That being said I'm on my 3rd PS2 and I wouldn't even dream of buying a PS3. I bought myself a digital camera the other night and I almost bought a sony, but the fact that you have to use sony specific product turned me off from it.

Damn your cybershot sucks? My friends cybershot was what made me go out and get a new camera.

Sony pissed me off when the price of the PS3 was announced. Even now thats $100 less, I still wont pay that much for a vid game console. It seems the only way to justify that price is the Blu Ray, but by the time that shit takes off, there will be cheaper and better Blu Ray players.

I love my PS3. I've always been a big Xbox fan, but the PS3 seriously has me recommending it over the 360 now.

The price is high, but when you really look at what you get, it's an unbelievable value.

I don't play video games, so the things I am having problems with is stuff like cameras, scanners, monitors, ect.

That's what I ended up getting. Thing takes some pretty nice pictures, and it's got the shot stabilization feature. Video looks good too and it's got a rechargeable battery. I'm stoked.

Same here! I have a 32" wega that was dropped down a flight of stairs and it still works. I've since put that TV in my bedroom and now have a 52" Sony SXRD and freaking love it! I've only had good luck with my Sony products and almost all my electronic devices are Sony.

I don't have as much Sony gadgets as the rest so I can't judge as well, but the 2 I do own (PS2 and a minidisc player) well I've had the PS2 now for about 6 going on 7 years (I bought it pretty much the year they came out) and I've definitely put many miles on it, and my minidisc (which I actually sold this year) I had for 4 years and that was dropped, stepped on, taken to the gym and barbells hitting it doing deadlifts (I kept it in my pocket) and I never had troubles with that either.

You have to research the particular component you are buying. Sony makes great TVs (I love my Bravia 1080p LCD), but their A/V receivers are very average. Onkyo makes awesome A/V receivers, but their loudspeakers suck. Has Sony ever been known for making good cameras? No, they haven't. Canon on the otherhand has been making great cameras for decades, and still do.

See where I'm going with this? I have been involved with consumer electronics for years, and I know the worst thing you can do is blindly believe one company should be your source for anything electronic.

My Cybershot F717, the big boy, just took a shit after just 4 years. That seems like a good, long life in the ever changing and evolving digital camera market, but motherfucker it was $900.

Those fuckers are heavy. I cringe whenever I have to move it. My 52" weighs half the amount than that damn 32".

I guess I was lucky. The frame cracked a bit and it's barely noticeable but that was all that happened.

The last few Sony items I have had (walkman andd a 300 disc CD player all sucked big time. the 300 CD player would skip on about half my cds. I gave it a week and then gave it away. I picked up a older Denon receiver, Technics CD player and DMC Time Frame (TF500) speakers for $100 yesterday. All work great. I feel a lot of the electronics today are so fragile compared to years past. My Marantz keeps on ticking as does my Pioneer. Both from the 70's. Heavy as hell and suck up a lot of energy, but they are solid.

Most TV repair men I talk to all say this about Sony TV's, they are awesome until their warrenty runs out. They seem to have a knack for breaking down after the warrenty, not in all cases though.

Very true, I tell everyone this but they don't understand it.

Who would buy Sony speakers, not me. I would rather have a Bose.
Same with a A/V receiver, I would prefer a Pioneer, Denon or an Onkyo if I would go that route.

I have a Sony 50" LCD projection TV that I bought in 2004 and it has been wonderful, knock on wood, and the bulb hasn't even burned out yet, and I use that TV ALOT.

I also just picked up a PS3 about a month ago cause my Xbox360 decided to take a shit about one month after the one year warranty ran out. I took out a one year warranty on the PS3 from the store, so regardless of whether it breaks or not, I will have me a new PS3 at this time next year, so all in all, it should last me a while.

Other than that , I have a Sony surround sound system, and I have to admit, while it is decent, it isn't really that great...seems like it should be louder than it is. I have a Panasonic bookshelf stereo system that I got over 10 years ago and it blows the Sony system away, so who knows.

I would recommend a PS3 over an Xbox any day though, especially after the thing dying on me like that. I had the PS2 from the day it came out until I bought the xbox last year and it worked great.

I read every review on the net before I buy any electronics these days. Some brand that you thought might have done well in years past isn't doing so well with that same product line while some company that did well in one product may be doing just as well in a new product line.

Well, I'm not too sure if they used to be shit or not but I do know now that their Hi-Def tv's are amazing. I have the Samsung TV and 5.1 Surround sound and I love them both. As far as Sony goes, like I said before the PS3 is absolutely amazing. Not sure about too many other products.

Believe it or not Samsung makes the current Sony LCD panels in a joint venture.

When it comes to LCD panels, the rule is sort of like mattresses. The three S's. Serta, Sealy, and Stearns & Foster for mattresses. Sony, Samsung, and Sharp for LCD panels .
