    Strange computer problem

I bought a new 500g harddrive. No jumper is requires for SATA, so I left it at default. I formated the drive using the XP pro CD, and installed the OS. It took 3 hours because of the size of the drive. Once everything booted, I tried to install my drivers, and the path was unrecognized. I was confused as to why so I looked at the volume in windows explorer. It was assigned the drive letter f.

I figured no problem, so I went into disk management in the computer management console. Well it won't let me change the drive letter to c, because it is the boot volume. I can't change the path that the drivers install under, plus I don't want to have to deal with weird problems later caused by the os not being installed on c.

I put in the XP CD again to see if I could do something from there, but it is saying the OS is on C, but when I boot windows again, it is saying F. I googled the problem, but found nothing for my situation. What the fuck is going on here. I have installed XP a 100 times, and this has never happened. I really don't won't to have to wait another 3 hours to install.

I hope somebody here as seen this, and can point me in the right direction to figure this out a little faster.

I put my boot drive on a diff. letter p: or q: I think, I have not had any problems with it not being C:
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my computers. I'll figure out eventually how to switch that motherfucker back to c, or I'll reformat, and hopefully it will fix the glitch.

So then you are running one drive (you removed the old one) with jumper set to master and the OS wants to label it as f?

i read that you might be safer from viruses n trojans using a different drive letter for your os than c because they usually target c drive. i had mine on another for a long time with no issues.

Don't look back ~ You're not going that way!

start>control panel>classic view> admin tools>computer management>storage>disk management>rt click f drive> select change drive letter> rename drive as C> will prolly not work but that's how you rename other drives the easy way.

That's why I assigned mine a different letter, in fact all of my hard drives are on weird letters, then I mapped a network drive to C: on my sacrifice machine that I DL torrents on and made that C: on my main machine, I always hoped it would throw anyone off but a smart person would just look for multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS...

Anyway KelJ, I found this, it may work if not then you'll have to reinstall anyway because on another Micrsoft page it said you can not reassign the boot drive letter...

How to restore the system/boot drive letter in Windows

Thats what I tried to do. You can't change the drive letter of your boot volume from within windows.

But, I figured out how to do it using a tool I found on google.
