    Need Help w/ Resume

    Kent's Resume

Above is my current resume, which I am looking to send around relatively soon as well as bring to a career fair in a few days. I'm trying to get it down to one page (currently, it is one page if you cut out the body of the "Activities" section). I've taken it to the career center here at the University of Iowa to have people look at it and get suggestions, but they haven't been much more help as far as trimming it down goes.

What I'm looking for now is anything you guys think I can shorten or omit entirely. I was thinking about getting rid of some of the bullet points under the internship I took last summer or condensing them (just need suggesions). I was also considering getting rid of some of the "Activities." Please only take a look if you plan to leave constructive criticism or useful comments.

I have taken out some personal information and I should also note the formatting is somewhat distorted due to the way Microsoft Word saved it into a web page file.

I'm just finishing my resume. My sister gave me a book titled Step-by-step Resumes. It's the single best book I've ever seen on resumes.

Drop by your local bookstore and pick it up and put it to use. You'll be amazed at what it will do for you. It covers every aspect of your resume. From the content, to the layout, to even the fonts that you use.

    It leaves nothing out.

Thanks, DOMS. I've been meaning to pick up a resume/cover letters book for some time now; I will look into the one you've suggested. In the meanwhile, do you have any tips for my res?

I heard it is a good thing to give a reason why you want to work in that place. But maybe it is best to say this only in an interview.

Have you targeted the resume for the company you are applying at?

    I hope these help:
    • Minimize the use of the word "I". It's assumed and, if they're are too many, it's annoying.
    • Make sure to list any achievements that you've done.
    • Use a header (you can simply bold the section title) to separate each section.
    • Use the verdana font. That will make it easier to read and make it stand out, if only in some small way.
    • Quantify where ever possible. Don't just say "I sold houses". You'd say "I sold an average of 3 houses per month". Do this unless the numbers aren't really impressive. In which case you'd emphasize your ability to do the work.
    • Make a bulleted list of your responsibilities for each job that you've held.
    • For both your achievements and your responsibilities, start each sentence with an action verb.
    • Realize who your targeting your resume for, and make sure to choose words and phases that would appeal to them.

Instead of saying "trained 2 employees", just say "trained employees"...
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

What about a contact and phone number for each company you worked for? Or did you intentionally leave that out so we don't call them and pretend to be you and make you look bad? Not that I would but you never know about some others...

Would it be better if he put in a vague quantity or an adjective?

"I thoroughly trained several of new employees" or something like that?

"Thoroughly trained new employees" I'd leave out the I and the quantity....I was taught never to use "I" in a resume....
