Need help fixing freinds laptop (trojan)

My friend got a virus on his laptop, you cannot run anything and its slow as fuck, so I used safe mode with networking, and got anti-virus programs, run it, and there is always 1 or 2 high risk viruses... so I delete them, and when i scan again they are still there, I can't kill those fuckers... I tried various anti-virus programs, such as avg free, avast pro, etc. Does his laptop got any chance? I tried doing a system restore from, start-accessories-system tools, but that didn't help... what about upgrading the operating system... will that get rid of the virus?

So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.

if he doesn't need anything from the hard drive...saved files, etc...then reformat.

Less than 10% of the time have I been able to make a full recovery from a virus infection. Often times crucial operating system files are corrupted. Use safe mode to recover whatever files he needs, then reformat.

My numbers are almost the reverse of that. I can recover about 95% of infected machines. But there's no way that Mike can pull it off with that sort of certainty.

Do what they're telling you Mike. You'll save yourself a lot of frustration.

Yeah, about a year and a half ago, Dale lost his...file, too. I cry every time that I think about it.

If you have the names of the viruses that keep popping up you can search the AntiVirii sites for removal tools and instructions...
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

just delete everything on his C drive? He doesn't have any real important files, and if he does we can just back them up in safe mode... Is there a special way to format or do I just highlight everything and delete? Will he need a new operating system?

You don't. Without knowing how, cleaning up a corrupted OS is an exercise in frustration. If the virus software you have installed is up to date and unable to fix the problem than the average user is not going to just fix it in a day. You could spend a week looking for what viruses you have and how to repair them.

Going into safe mode and copying the doc's folder as well as the IE or firefox fav's should get you ready to reformat.

Do you have the system discs or the OEM OS discs? It doesn't sound like you do which is why I asked what the brand and model number of the laptop is.

The bottom of the laptop will have what OS the unit was licensed with. It'll help if you look for that little ms os sticker and get that info while you're there.
