    Firefighers

Been a while since I've posted, but any firefighters here on IM? Been looking into my local FD, DCFD, it's probie school, the written exam etc. Just wondering if I could get any info on the whole process, I wouldnt be entering for a few years, if at all.

    Thanks,
You guys are going to lose. You might as well just cheer for me, because Boston isn’t winning in Boston for the season opener. I’m sorry. " - Gilbert Arenas

I actually just got back from a weekend up in nyc yesterday. Friday night was spent at DJ Reynolds on 56th I think, and then walked around 42nd saturday night, including a show at the laugh factory. Seriously though, anyone know anything about the process?

I live in FFX county, oak hill, went to oakton high school. I'd appreciate any info you have, feel free to PM me or w/e.

My friend asked me the same question...why DC over FFX county FD. Plus you always hear about the fcfd being sent to like new orleans after Katrina, and winning all those competitions and all.

However, I'd be in it for the job itself. I love the city, plus I'd want quite a bit more work than an occasional house fire or something per firehouse.

Also, I though most FD's had a system of 4 different shifts, meaning you work roughly 7 days a month as shown below.

    http://www.dcfd.com/2007.jpg

I'd be interested in both departments, but I think DC is definitely the preferred position.

Right now I live just outside of DC, but I used to live in NE on 8th. I'd be in it for the career, and I have no idea how they run it in DC, thats what I'm trying to figure out, or jsut the whole process in general. Or any info/facts/tips or w/e that might help

here's a thought...have you gone straight to the source and asked them questions directly? Is that a possibility?

dcfire.com is the source, and its not very helpful. Look for yourself. I've looked around elsewhere online, maybe im just inept, but I'm struggling to find a good detailing of the general process. Plus hearing it from someone who actually knows firsthand here on IM would be nice.

dont forget bud every state has a different process...for example.

In New Jersey you take a civil service written exam...if you pass...then you take a physical exam (which kicks your ass)...then you get placed on a list with every person from the state and ranked by region and the towns hire according from top to bottom off that list. A new list is brough out every 2 years. You dont have to pay for anything and if you are selected by a town/region they will examin you further put you through many medical tests/psych evals etc then pay for your training and schooling and have you pull your shifts.

Now in Florida you must go through all your training on your own. Pay out of pocket for all the certifications go through all the school and eventually you will come out with an assoc in fire science and be a florida state certified fireman. Then from there you fill out your applications which are only valid for fire dpets within a 20 miles radius of your address and send them in. then its like any other job you simple wait and hope they get around to your application and like what they see.

So now there are two extremes and all states are different. I'm not familiar with DC and honestly bud I really dont have to much time to go over that website I just finished a 36 hour shift of EMS and am shot LOL but your best bet is to find a phone number on that site and call them directly and they will explain the ENTIRE proccess step by step with you.

From there feel free to hit me up via PM and we can go over anything you want from diet, training (I did pretty good at this) straegies, etc etc.
