    Congratulations, graduates

I thought it would be a good idea to make one thread for this, since - the way I understand it - a bunch of you graduated this term. So congratulations (kentdog, kelju?)!

Here's some advice from Matt Foley for all of you graduates.

So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.

One of the guys who reports for my station looks and acts a lot like Chris. We asked him if he would mind saying something about "living in a van down by the river" in one of his live shots, so far he has yet to do that (that'd be Christmas reel material!).

Thanks so much guys! I am so happy I can't stand it. I can now do whatever I want. Being bound to the University means I couldn't go to other countries and work for a few years if I wanted, but now I am free, and I plan to see the world.

I am the first of my bloodline to earn a college degree. My mom cried, and my stubborn ass dad even managed to muster up a "I'm proud of you son". Life is almost perfect. I had to move out of the dorms. My employer wanted me to keep working for them while I job hunt, and they even threw in free living arrangements as part of the deal. I can leave in one of their extra houses for as long as I work there. There is no TV or internet, but thats cool. I have been working, reading books, and getting back in the gym which is all I want to do for a month or so anyway. I will be studying for all of my major certifications while I take my time looking for the perfect job. This is really an awesome situation.

Thanks for the thread Witchblade and the congrats guys (damn KelJu beat me to it). Congrats to KelJu, congrats to kbm (for the doctoral exams) and congrats to all other grads. I'm kind of taken by the whole thing, and I never expected to be. As soon as I was done with my last final yesterday, I just felt all an overwhelming happiness. I'm a graduate!

I'm still looking for something better than the offers I've gotten. I want to travel a bit too. It's not for sure yet, but a trip to China in the next six months is tentative. I have never been there, and being in international business, it should be an experience. Plus it'll give me a chance to brush up on my Chinese.

KelJu, what are your travel plans?

Congrats to you too, Dude! I plan to travel to the middle east, preferably Kuwait. I have a good friend who is from Kuwait, and has family there. They need American and European workers there who have specialized skills that I am working on right now.

If not Kuwait, I will be applying to any company that is doing Iraq reconstruction, and paying top dollar for skilled Americans. I could do that for just a few years and pay off my laon,s and save enough to buy a small house on cash.

And finally, if that doesn't workout, I will be looking to move to Atlanta, San Jose, Houston, Austin, Minneapolis, New York, or Jacksonville.

Not graduating but damn, was a good night. Went out to the bar with around 6 of my classmates and my professor - first time that has ever happened for me.

The 3 beers on an empty stomach and 1.5 baskets of fries was totally worth the memorable night. Our professor even bought us all a round - was good times.

Congrats to you youngsters! I'll be 47 next month and have had 4 different jobs since graduating college back in '84. Lived in Soloniki, Greece; Caen, France; Tel Aviv, Israel; Naples, Italy; Bilbao, Spain; Madrid, Spain. Highly recommended to go see the world if you have the chance. It will give you a different perspective and appreciation for the good old US of A!

What, so having a professor who pushed his class to learn harder than any other professor I've taken coming out with us to the bar isn't something to remember?

His final exam lasted for 6 hours straight, and that was after another 2 hour final exam, and 5 hours of work.

Besides, I bust my ass on eating with perfection, no alcohol ever - that is including during the semester. So no, I don't go out to parties, bars, restaurants, whatever. Shit like this is a once a year deal for me if I even decide to do it once that year, so yes it's going to be memorable.

Just don't get caught up in making all that easy money out there, next thing you know you're a balding middle aged man who's worked in the Middle East most of his life and hasn't really had much fun.....believe me those Arab countries are no fun at all, they have a severe lack of women and you definitely won't be smoking any weed...if you do you better be ready to face the punishment which from what I remember is harsh. I think they rate heroin and weed just under murder.....

Have more faith in me dude! I would do it just long enough to pay off my loans and jump start me buying a house. It would be awesome to pay for half or all of my home in cash then settle down in a nice job.

All I really want is a motorcycle, house, and a nice woman. Is that too much to ask for?

Fair enough, not everyone loves the social scene. But you may regret not cutting loose more often, later on, but then again, maybe not.

BTW, 6 hour exam????!!!! That's nuts. I would have said you deserved at least 8+ beers for coming through that beast. What was it on?

Maybe, maybe not. I had never been big into the social scene and drinking, I didn't grow up with it.

The exam started at about 5pm and went to around 11pm. First hour was an online Cisco final exam, and the next 5 hours or so was cabling and configuring a network topology of around 28 routers and 10-12 switches with several different routing protocols, redistribution, VoIP.

The practical part should not have taken as long as it did, but unfortunately a lot of people in my class have no idea what they're doing (full class practical final). Even some of the basic stuff like where to use straight-thru cables or crossover cables they got wrong, and I ended up troubleshooting and fixing it, in addition to setting up half a dozen more devices than I should have had to.

Out of a class of 15, there are only 4-5 of us that really know what we're doing, that's why it took so long.

Like I said in another post, I never grew up in the social and drinking scene. As a result, going to a party with 200 random people isn't fun for me, it's stressful. I would rather hang out with a smaller group of people who I'm friends with.

I'm jealous! We only got to wire 3 routers and 4 switches, no VoIP, and few protocols. We basically did static routing and RIP. I feel like I am not prepared. It wasn't my professor's fault. In the 4 year universities, they are forced to teach theory and concepts rather than hands on in order to keep their accreditation. During my exit interview with the Dean, I was asked what I feel was the school's weakest point, and I gave him a good 5 minutes gripe about how I know a ton of theory and methodologies, but I don't have enough networking knowledge to land a great job right out of school, and that I am pissed that I need to take an extra 3 months to teach myself Cisco.

Yea, we have a full networking lab here (including remote racks so I can configure stuff from my house if I want, it's cabled in such a way that we can make almost any topology

In my class equivalent to yours focused on the CCNA, I only cabled 4 routers and like 2 switches also. The class I just got finished with focused on the BSCI and BCMSN which are 2 of the exams for the CCNP. If you like networking you're going to love the BSCI especially - it goes in-depth in every IGP and touches on BGP.
