    Ipod Help Needed!

OK, here's the deal. I lost about 4k songs when my HD took a dump last week. I have all the songs on my Ipod though. Is there any way to upload the songs from my Ipod back into my computer/Itunes?

    Yes.

Download IPodRip, plug your Ipod in, follow IpodRip's directions and you're all set.

Only problem is that sometimes the songs don't come up titled and will instead be listed as a number, but you just listen to it and rename it and all is well on Cherry St.

See what I'm saying with my mp3 player I could have just opened the device as a drive and copy/pasted the files to my computers hdd...ipods suck...

i seriously hate the ipod, particularly for the reason this thread was posted. I think it's INSANE that I can't drag and drop songs on and off my ipod, rename them without having to have the original song still on the comp AND in a specific folder, or play songs on my computer FROM my ipod. It's a rediculiously made piece of equipment.

on that note, I found out in my other thread how to play movies. I hadn't "synced" my ipod to play movies. Which means I didn't click some easy to miss, hard to find checkbox to let my ipod play movies. It seems like it'd be defaulted ON, it's a freaking iPod Video!!!

To some degree I feel the same, but iTunes is used to index the order of things without creating an M3U file etc etc, so the iPod is simply more complex than an "MP3 player." Although not having the more modern complex MP3 players, I don't know how others work to have solved such a problem. AnaPod I believe allowed drag/drop functionality while maintaining the indexing structure.

My old non-GUI drag and drop 64MB MP3 player had one 'playlist' available which was all files on the flash card, in order or mixed up. The order was dictated by upload timestamp, it was pretty dumbed down.

There is a good reason for it. Many people download peer-to-peer songs and movies to their Itunes folder. If that option were on by default, so many people would be clueless as to why their sync takes an hour and why it never finishes because it runs out of room.

OK, well Ipodrip is pissing me off. First it said can not find device although Itunes has no problem. Then it found the device and said loading data. I figured I was gold then...WRONG. It sat there all friggin night with the same message and nada.

I tried it again and it says can not find device.

ALright when you plug your ipod in go to your computer and it should show up, click it and open it, you will see calanders, nots, and contacts, go to options and then find show hidden files click ok and then you should see iPod_control, then there is a music folder, and to get it to work as an EHDD go to itunes and ipod controls and "Enable Dsk Use"

This was from my neighbour, I haven't tried it yet. But it is meant to make it an external HD

A little clarification if you don't mind. Once in ipod control I click on the music folder then minimize and go into itunes, ipod controls and enable disk use? Then run ipodrip?

Also if it is then an EHDD I should be able to just drag and drop without ipodrip, correct?

I know the feeling. I had a Jukebox and now have the LG Viewty that need a special program to transfer stuff from your PC to the device's hard drive. It sucks. My Archos Gmini is way more user friendly. You can just open the folders as if you were using a CD and drag stuff in.

Iain, I did what you said and what the above article said as well. I was able to get all my songs and pics off my ipod. The problem is/was I had to manually do it. I had about 100 files with around 30-40 songs in each. I opened each file individually and copied/pasted to my itunes.

It took me about an hour but hell, at least I got them back so I'm

I'm trying to get songs from my brothers Ipod onto my computer so I can put them on my Ipod but IpodRip won't seem to work and neither will any of the programs that were listed there, atleast for free anyways.

That was pretty much my experience as well. I went into itunes advance setting and changed unchecked the box to automatically sync ipod and then checked use as external disk then click apply. Goto "my computer and find your ipod and open it. Then enable find hidden files and folders and you will the file ipod controller (i think thats the name. you can't miss it) and open it. All your songs, pics, movies are in there. Just drag and drop from there or copy and paste the whole folder.

The link above describes it in much more detail but it was fairly easy but time consuming. I had to copy about 4k songs and 1k pics.

I'm able to do that, but the songs have such odd file names it almost makes it impossible to pick out the songs that I want. Basically, it would be a royal pain in the ass to get all of his songs and then delete all the duplicates, might be worth $10 bucks to just buy one of those programs.

Yeah, I copied them all and had about 75 duplicates that I had to delete. It was much easier to do that then try to figure out what the names of each one of those crazy files were.

The good news is it copies everything over exactly how it was listed on the previous ipod without any correction.
