What a joke the judicial system is. That is pretty sad.

I wouldn't say its a joke. Its one of the best systems in the world. It is flawed, but that can be fixed.
On a positive note, the truth was exposed and he was released. Hopefully the state will do right by him by getting him started back into society.

Imagine how much he lost when he was wrongfully convicted. How can anyone repay him for those years he spent in prison. I wonder what they do for people when this happens.

I couldn't fathom that. But, he still has 1/2 his life to go...and is now free to go about doing it. hmm...27 years of potential wages lost plus mental anguish of having his life robbed from him. what would 'fair' compensation consisst of?

Well, let's see. That would be $6 an hour x 40 x 52 x 27 = $336,960 + compounding interest of about 5% (which is extremely modest) annually + 3% for inflation would leave him with a grand total of $762,978.

I think this would be a fair place to start.

If i had been in that guy's shoes, i would ..

    1) Kill the girl who accused me of raping her
    2) Kill the judge, DA and jury who convicted me

and if i am still alive and free after that

    3) Go on a shooting rampant until my death

I would have a hard time not doing the same...well not the shooting rampage part.

I feel really bad for the guy. The country owes the man. I like largepkg's formula, only I would figure in annual raises. Everything the woman has should be taken and give to Chatman, and if she doesn't have that much money's worth of stuff, the government should pick up the tab. Maybe they should take some of the DA's stuff too.

Sad story with a somewhat happy ending, but not very happy.

Zactly. There is no perfect system.

The thing is, he'll probably live an overall better life with the "compensation" he'll receive than he would have had he been working on his own for the past 27 years.

double jeopardy: can't be convicted of the same crime twice, right?

I love watching these stories on CourtTV....

Texas leads the country in prisoners freed by DNA testing, releasing at least 30 wrongfully convicted inmates since 2001, according to the Innocence Project.

I would have to go The Fugitive on their asses and prove myself innocent...I couldn't sit in a cell day to day waiting for someone else to get me out....
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

The reason Texas leads in overturned convictions is because the state lab they used was equipped to store evidence (DNA samples) for a very lengthy time. Most other states were unable to retain and store evidence for more than a few years after trial.
