U working at all right now? P-T I mean? U think that could help?
DO u envision urself making enough money to support a family at this point?
This is a tough one for sure. I would seek out every other possible option before putting ur future in the bin. Esp. since u mention being a smart kid.

Tell your dad to look into getting a Home equity line of credit. Use the equity in your house until he finds a job. You could get a part time job as well. I worked all through high school.
You're in your final year of highschool, correct? Try to find a part-time job and finish the year. After this year, which only lasts like five more months anyway, you should be able to get a better job.
nope im not even workin part time right now. ive been tryin to get school work done and stuff along with weight lifting. yeah i could bring in enough to make the house payment if i worked 40 hours a week. top five in my school for every major test that we have taken

Maybe getting a p-t job, while it wont solve every problem, could help, while not jeopardizing ur potential and future.

^^ thats rough man!! It saddens me that YOU, the "child" afterall, would have to sacrifice to this extent to make up for your parent's disregard.

I dropped out of school when i was your age (a junior). I ended up working for a year and getting my GED.
At my school I had to wait until 6 months after I dropped out before I could take the GED test, you might want to look into that. I would talk to a school counselor if I were you. They could give you all the details, and help you make your decision.
However, I would say don't drop out if you can avoid it. Especially since you say you are doing well in school. It will probably hurt you intellectually and socially, and those are things that money can't buy.
I can imagine how your father must feel, I have a friend who also was very depressed when his father died. But eventually he broke out of the funk and he's working full time now. I don't know what eventually motivated him, so I can't help you there, but there is hope.
Have you talked to your parents about dropping out?
this is gonna be harsh, dont drop out. if your dad was honestly trying then it might be an option, but from what you said he is a bum. it is not your responsibility to take care of your family, its the other way around until your 18.
go to school, do well.. and maybe get a PT job to help here and there.
what did your dad do before he became unemployed?

What I am about to say may come across as harsh and selfish. Unless your mother or father have some sort of horrific illness, you go your ass to school. You do not owe your entire future to them, especially for their mistakes.
Your father hasn't worked in a year? Thats fucked up. My brother is the same way. I feel bad for him, and I wish I could help me, but the truth is he gave up. Nothing I could do will make him pick up the pieces of his life. I offer him advice and encouragement, but at the end of the day, I will be doing my own thing. My own thign includes working my ass off to have a nice future.
Don't be stupid. You will think your helping your family by quiting school, but you will resent them for it later. If your family is financially in trouble that means you basically get to go to college for free. Go to Junior college on a pell grant. Work hard, make good grades, then you can go to the University for free, too.
Don't trade your future in order to try and fix your family's mistakes.
I used to do drugs. I still do drugs. But I used to, too.

You need to kick your old mans ass, no way would I have let my father mope about jobless while I suffered. You have got to want to rise above, you have got to want to do better than your parents have...or you will end up just like him in some job where you are easily expendable no skills so no job security.....stay in school then when you can join the military and get far away from a going nowhere town, use your time in the military to do some night school college courses and then the GI Bill when you are discharged....

If you drop out of school you might find yourself in a similar situation because it could seriously set you back, and from the sounds of things your family wont be able to help you out if that happens.
Dont drop out, like the others have said - stay there, work hard, get your qualifications. After that, then get an even better job and if you still need to help your family out, youll be better off to do it because you're rolling in it.
It may be tough, it may be selfish, but you have your OWN life to worry about now. Let your parents worry about theirs.

I have to say that I admire your intentions for helping your family. But I wanna call you on the whole marines thing. The military can be a good thing for some people but it may be possible for you to capitalize on your family's financial state. If you'll fill out the FAFSA early in january or february of your senior year you will most likely qualify for a huge amount of financial aid. My parents don't make much and I get a lot of fin aid, In fact I just got a refund check from the university for over 2 grand. Just for going to school, the government will just hand this to you and never expect anything back. I get PAID over 4 grand per school year to get educated.

I think he will benefit more from getting way the hell out of a nowhere town and getting some life experience before going to college, I think if I had gone to college straight out of High School I'd have partied way too much and my academic endeavors would've suffered.....
