    The best TV around...

What is the best TV you've come across that is reasonably priced? With some money I'll be getting from selling my PS3, I'll be purchasing a much needed TV.

    I saw these:

    Vizio VU42LF LCDTV - 42", 1080p, HDMI, Aspect Ratio 16:9, Contrast Ratio 1500:1, Resolution 1920 x 1080 - Refurbished RB-VU42LF at TigerDirect.com

Toshiba 42HL67 REGZA HD LCD TV - 42", 1366x768, 720p Native, HDMI, PC Input, ATSC Tuner 42HL67U at TigerDirect.com

Any and all help is needed.

Check newegg as well. I've had good experiences with LCD's from them.

Go to a big electronics store and stand in front of a bank of plasma tv's and then in front of a bank of LCD's. Plasmas generate a TON of heat. If you can live with that then they are okay.

I've heard from quite a few technicians that Vizio gives a good picture, but they are notoriously unreliable. The money you save up front will be spent two years from now replacing it.

After doing a ton of research and price comparisons I ended up with a Sharp Aquos and am 100% happy with my decision.

make sure you do your research progressive is better than intermitent(sp?). is it going to hang on a wall? i really like DLP tv's, but you cant hang them. maybe look at the sharp aquos.

edit: looks like albob has a sharp.. they are nice

One of the important things to keep in mind when buying a HD LCD is the type, and number, of hook-ups it has.

My sister purchased a very nice Samsung 42" LCD with 3 HDMI, 3 component, 2 S-Video, 2 Coaxial, and 1 SPDIF, hook-ups (This is from memory, but I feel like I've forgotten something). The number of HDMI hook-ups is crucial. When I hooked it up, it already needed two; one for the HD-TIVO and another for the X-BOX. And I'm betting that the third will get used within the next year or two.

She purchased it online for a great price, but I can't remember how much.

And, like ALBOB said, stay away from plasmas. In addition to the heat, they also don't do true black and have a life-time lower than that of an LCD and they can burn-in (the ghost image of something left on the screen for too long). I believe that plasmas will give you a brighter picture, but I don't that it's worth all the downsides.

I prefer plasma, here is a good comparison.

Ohh and plasmas blacks are better then LCDs. For me though its the more viewing angles and the motion blur LCD has that seals the deal.

check out circuit city....i believe they are having a promotion where you pay no interest for like 3 years on any tv over $1000. sweet deal if you ask me. I got 18 months no interest and I thought that was good from sears.

also, HDMI ports are very important. MY samsung 46" lcd has 3 hdmi ports and they are all used already....dvr cable box, ps3 and dvd player. It's a lot nicer to not have to deal with all those component cables, this is 3 cables, the power cord and that's it

I think plasma's have the best picture but LCD's are just as good. I don't get all caught up in the 720p and the 1080p shit. I work in the television broadcasting business. There is hardly anything that is truly shot in 1080p. Most of it is 720p. You can hardly tell the difference between the two when they upconvert it anyway. The difference between 720p and 1080p that is. The only thing I see different is the price difference. So get get yourself a nice plasma or LCD 720p tv and have fun. That is what I'm going to do once Bush gives my fiancee and I 800$.

My experience with Vizio....first one we got a speaker just quit working about a month after we got it, the replacement we returned because the blacks and night scenes in movies were washed out and I watch a lot of dark movies......finally got a Phillips and everything is great with it...our other is a Samsung 42' which has a beautiful picture as well...

    Good to know.

LCD > Plasma in my situation.
I've heard from quite a few technicians that Vizio gives a good picture, but they are notoriously unreliable. The money you save up front will be spent two years from now replacing it.
I've read similar things. Picture is solid, tv is great, and then at about the one or two year point shit hits the fan. I'll be avoiding Vizio's like the plague.

After doing a ton of research and price comparisons I ended up with a Sharp Aquos and am 100% happy with my decision.
Sharp Aquos seem pretty solid as far as I'm concerned, and I value your opinion so...

The Samsung's you refer to are top sellers on Amazon and as far as the comments go, it seems like many people like them.

I've always assumed that buying online was the way to go as far as televisions went, but I see your point on the no interest. Blah, I'd probably just as rather pay upfront so I'm not in any more debt out of college.

Interesting stance. I'd imagine there is a significant difference in price between the 720p and 1080p...

The 4061 has 10,000:1 Contrast Ratio and the 4071 has 25000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Also the 4071 has 120Hz allowing for better motion response which is good for watching sports and action movies where a cheaper LCD might get blurry during those fast movements...Speaker system is better in the 4071...overall it's just better image and sound quality....

This is work a look... LCD vs Plasma

If you want the best hold out for a good OLED TV(organic light emitting diode), although this technology is just out, and very exspensive- sand will be superseded by SED.

The best will by SED, which is expected to be released in the next year or so. This uses similar technoloy to CRT's, except that it can have cathode ray tubes for every pixel, unlike traditional CRT which uses one for the whole display. CRT (traditional) handles black levels far better than LCD's and plasmas, so when realeased SED will own all.
