    Any skateboarders here?

I have a skateboard that just doesn't get the distance per push that I see in lots of other skateboards. At the moment I can't afford a longboard so I'm trying to rig my skateboard to be less trick focused and more transportation focused. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm using it to get around campus/street skateboarding so I was looking at Bones STF wheels. What about the bearings? Will changing either really make any difference or am I SOL until I change my deck?

Can't you just put a harness on Tit and let her pull you around?

I skateboarded probably from around age 12-16 and then a brief period at age 19 for some reason. Some of my best childhood memories. We used to have an indoor skatepark about a 1/2 mile from my house and my buddies and I would chip in and pay 50$ for 2 hours to rent the whole place out. I also went to Camp Woodward in Woodward, PA for a week. It is a camp specifically for Skaters, In Liners, BMXers and gymnists. Sick time. Basically choose from 10 skate parks to skate from: have short lessons each day, skate where ever you want the rest of the day, hit on all the gymnastic chicks at the pool, great food, free shit, professional skate demos, etc etc. I was 15 when I went there.

I still tune in to skate events every now and then. Pro skateboarder Jereme Rogers actually grew up right around the way. I definately think skateboarding is a great thing for kids to do as long as the whole purpose isn't the rebel/punk deal.

And to answer your question I'd recommend getting big wheels, probably 60mm or above. That will make a huge difference Also get fast and reliable bearings like Bones. I used to slap on the the 63mm Spitfires when I just wanted to cruise. Cracks and rocks in the street wouldn't even stop those things.

I skated back in the Animal Chin days.....with fat decks and neon strings...
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

I considered skateboarding like science fiction when I was small. Does it really work? Because it doesnt make a lot of sense, only your feet are touching it and it is not even grabing the skate, so do you really go together with the skate when you push it? I didnt know the answer even if I watched other people do it so I never tried it. Is it difficult to learn?

I've been out of the skating loop for a while. However, getting new bearings and wheels will definitely have an effect on your speed and maintainence of speed. How long has it been since you changed them?

I can't really recommend any brands because I don't know what is still around and what is new. I do remember Bones bearings were good shit, I'm sure the wheel were fine as well.

ohhh and if it helps, the higher number of bearing (Abec 5, Abec 7...ect) technically the faster they should roll, not meaning better quality or anything, I think it just means more bearings, Id have to look it up and re familiarize myself with this shit, but I believe I am correct...?

so assuming you are using the board for transportation and not to do huge tricks (ie drops and gaps) then you wont need to spend a lot of money on bearings made out of titanium....

I suppose I cant guarantee a higher abec number will created more distance per push, but in theory I think it should do the trick...
    along with some new wheels....

softer wheels will roll over concrete and rocks better, but will wear quicker, harder wheels can chunck and crack too though so....I dunno, try doing a little research, I am a bit rusty on this stuff, but Im trying to help

I would but she keeps biting the leash in half. I guess it's all that time she spends in her cage

I got back from a skateboard shop today cuz I'm being told both ways about whether I need harder or softer wheels. I actually got stopped on campus today where a dude said I need bigger, harder wheels. Dickhead.

but the guys at the shop seemed impressed with what I had and said just ride 'em out. Apparently until I get a longboard I have to take what a skateboard offers as far as casual transport. But they offered some affordable options if I just convert my trucks and everything from my skateboard to a new longboard deck and get some bigger wheels.

I'll be falling on my ass on a longboard instead of a skateboard in no time

    Hope i helped

lol well I said I wasnt for sure

soft wheels might ride slower, but should ride smoother...hard wheels I suppose would ride faster and thus may get you more distance per push....bigger wheels is also probably a good idea....did you ask about bearings?

the "official" word, contrary to some sites and advice I've gotten, that I got from the shop is that for street skateboarding you want soft wheels to absorb the shock of rocks, cracks, etc. that you encounter. And big wheels are good for more distance but anything larger than a 60 on a skateboard is just too big (at least for mine) as opposed to a longboard. And apparently my bearings were fine and didn't need changing

I used to ride 63 mm Spitfires for cruising and I'm pretty sure they were the hardest type. Definately need risers to prevent wheel bite. My decks used to have big ass burn indentations from the big wheels. I'm pretty sure Muska threw on some bigger wheel for this intro where he's just riding around.

I'm doing research on longboards and seeing people on campus with them. damn I want a longboard now. I see a guy just get on it and go yards without ever touching the ground, and I feel like I have to push every time I hit a sidewalk crack, nowhere near like in the above video. I don't nkow how he's doing that on a skateboard without pushing more

as a sidenote, I'm just now getting interested in tricks and you just can't do that on a longboard

You've gotta learn how to lean back and forth at the right times to glide over those cracks....but with a longboard shit it's like having a jeep...I see surfer girls here all the time riding their longboards effortlessly with surfboard underarm...

Yeah when you come up to a crack you gotta take your weight off the board kinda. Like pop the tail just a tiny bit right when you're going over the crack and hop a small amount like you're doing a bitch version of an ollie but don't actually slide your front foot to the nose. This way some of your weight is taken off the board and your board will sort of bump over the crack and you'll still be able to control the skateboard. As opposed to like having your knees bent and trying to dig right through the crack. It's hard to explain but you'll get it.

Manic is right it's all about balance and timing. You'll get it.

you know I was actually doing the opposite, so I'll give this a try. I was actually putting weight on my front leg like I was going down a hill whenever I got to a crack thinking that my weight would send me passed the crack. I'll definitly try what you said today, I'm betting it'll make a difference

It absolutely will. Same goes for riding off a curb. Right when your front wheel approaches the edge of the curb -- Manual (wheelie) but not too much; basically just enough so that your board stays straight so when the back wheels reach the edge of the board you sort of just drop off the curb evenly. And again put a little more weight on your tail than on your front foot (obviously because you need to in order to manual). Otherwise you'll just nose dive into the ground below. I'll try and find a video. But yeah definately don't put front weight on your board when going over cracks and stuff.

And you probably know not to lean back when you drop off a curb or else you'll slide out and land on your ass or head.
