Ruins of 7,000-year-old city found in Egypt oasis - Yahoo! News

A team of US archaeologists has discovered the ruins of a city dating back to the period of the first farmers 7,000 years ago in Egypt's Fayyum oasis, the supreme council of antiquities said on Tuesday.

"An electromagnetic survey revealed the existence in the Karanis region of a network of walls and roads similar to those constructed during the Greco-Roman period," the council's chief Zahi Hawwas said.

The remnants of the city are "still buried beneath the sand and the details of this discovery will be revealed in due course," Hawwas said.

"The artefacts consist of the remains of walls and houses in terracotta or dressed limestone as well as a large quantity of pottery and the foundations of ovens and grain stores," he added.

The remains date back to the Neolithic period between 5,200 and 4,500 BC.
The local director of antiquities, Ahmed Abdel Alim, said the site was just seven kilometres (four miles) from Fayyum lake and would probably have lain at the water's edge at the time it was inhabited.

    That's pretty cool.
So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.

i found a bunch of worthless old bottles, Indian marbles, broken bits of china... it was still fun dirt, sweat, mosquito bites and all or beach combing, nothing really valuable but great fun anyway.

My Friend Jordans father was one. He was divorced from Jordans mom but lived close by so we would go to his house and look at all the rad stuff he'd found, skulls and swords and arrowheads, spear tips, etc........Thing is he was gone from his son most of the year so if you have kids it would suck. It's not like the Young Indiana Jones where they drag the whole family around anymore....

That reminds me, after watching Indiana Jones with Jordans father he told us some cool stories about Malaysia and India where he did some of his first digs, for years after that I wanted to be an Archaeologist but more like Jones looking for the real mysteries like the Lost City of Atlantis.....
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

after my kids are grown i would seriously enjoy being in some dense crazy bug infested jungle hacking my way through thick vegetation looking for lost cities etc. vanity thinks i'm crazy. Tyler says he'll come.

the whole world has not been explored yet and there are undiscovered cities, "A team of US archaeologists has discovered the ruins of a city dating back to the period of the first farmers 7,000 years ago in Egypt's Fayyum oasis, the supreme council of antiquities said on Tuesday." and who can say they are certain nothing unexpected and exciting lies deep inside the rain forests of south america? or anywhere else?

    cool book.
yeah I find that stuff extremely interesting too.

I was watching a show one night on the History Chanel about the Mayans, and there was this extensive rainforest that covered ~700000 sq.km. of Latin America and some into southern Mexico, and they estimated that there could be 10s of thousands of undiscovered Mayan pyramids in there. it showed the view of the rainforest from a helicopter and all you could see were bumps and hills sticking out of the canopy here and there that they believed were some of the pyramids and ruins, it's just that the jungle was so dense it makes traveling/exploring through it nearly impossible.

if i could be there i would. some of the work i did in my life was wake up in the night screaming with both legs cramping like a bitch because the days work before killed you. and there was no money in it just making a place for my parents home where there was a forest of trees before we started. i wouldn't want leg cramps every night for sure but except for that the end of the day you feel pretty damn good. nearly is the key word. it's possible but people are too pussified today. everyone has a friggin couch.
