The internet is the most awesome thing ever, I mean at any moment you can research almost anything your mind can think of and if it's not there you can easily make it be there, better than any library ever built. I couldn't keep enough books in my house to help feed the voracious appetite for knowledge that the internet has enabled me to have.

Could you imagine what Socrates, Plato, Einstein could have achieved if they had that much info on hand at any given moment, I mean they were only as smart as how many books they could carry, and the availability of certain books on certain subjects, but we have these little compendiums of knowledge connected to our homes....

Or do you think Einstein would have been a World of Warcraft addict and neglected his studies???

no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

Sometimes I turn it on just so something in the house makes noise -

It would be a nice one: 1080p, good brand (Samsung), good price (sub-$2000), great reviews, most likely 46" but possibly 52". Cost has nothing to do with the equation; I can easily afford it, especially with Best Buy's 18-month no interest financing. I just don't know how often I'd use it. I signed up for 70-some channels (95% are worthless) cable tv with Starz last month because I wanted internet and they were running a deal to get both for a lower price than getting them separate, but I honestly watch tv as little as an hour or two per week. If anything, I will sometimes download movies and watch them on my 22" widescreen HD computer monitor.

Though I can afford the tv, I know if I get a new one, I will have to buy a stand, stereo system, pay for high def cable tv, high def cables, a blu ray player and movies, maybe even a new couch. I think these are within my means as well, but maybe the money is better spent elsewhere.

With my schedule: work, working out, going out with friends, dating, etc., I find it very hard to fit-in much time for tv. In fact, I think I could easily live without it, and pretty much have been for the past few years. I watch more movies if anything. But on the up-side, if I were to buy an HDTV, I could hook up my computer and play downloaded HD movies on it, and I can actually have people over to hang out (which I rarely do, because I have minimal furniture and an old crappy tv here.. I am more of the type to go over to someone elses' place to hang out). So this is a three-part question:

    - What do you think of my situation, and
    - How often do you watch TV?
    - Can you live without it?
I could definitely live without "TV." I actually use my computer for most of my movie/"TV" show watching. My 37" 1080P LCD is hooked up to my PC using DVI

    - In your situation, I think it would be a waste of money based on the fact that you're busy enough, and don't usually watch TV much, and generally go to other people's places to socialize.

    - Depends what you call "TV", but on average, less than an hour a day if you mean TV shows. I browse the internet and watch youtube videos a decent amount, but don't usually sit down to watch TV more than 30 mins, when I watch TV I'm usually eating.

    - Yes, I could live without it. I barely watch regular TV as it is, but I'm busy as well with school, work, and lifting.

I didn't watch TV for something like 3 years, not even movies on my TV. Nowadays though I like watching DVDs, Howard On Demand, and sometimes History channel.

Robot Chicken is my current favorite DVD set to watch (seasons 1/2).
