Rented one of "those" movies last night...

I saw one “those” movies last night. We all have our long list of movies that should have been great, but they sucked. But, what about the list of movies that should have sucked but turned out to be a good movie? A short list I know, but it exists for us all. For me, the poster child of that was the original Blade movie. Everything about that movie on paper meant it was going to suck out loud, and yet, it’s a great movie (if you like the genre) and considered a cult classic. Follow movies in the series, were much more what you would expect, which is to say, they sucked compared to the first one, but I digress…

I saw one of “those” movies last night. On paper, it should have sucked, a movie about a hitman based on a video game. I didn’t see anything else to rent, so I figured what the hell. Anyway, freakin’ movie surprised me. It’s very well done, well filmed, well acted, great fight/action sequences (think Matrix-like) , and not a drop of political correctness to be found. Yes, it’s short on depth and plot (as I think it assumes people renting it know the back story from playing the game) but other then that, it’s a blast.

This one goes on the short list of movies that should have sucked, but didn’t. HitMan gets an A – in the genre.

BTW, I take my movie watching very seriously and am a big home theater/two channel audio enthusiast:

What's on your short list of "those" movies?

i am glad to see some one else watched, and liked this movie. i purchased it the day it came out. hell i bought a xbox just to play the second game. i thought the only thing is there was a little to much comedy but that is from a gamers perspective. now as for a movie buff the comedy was great. i really liked when he said "if you dont stop talking i will put you back in the trunk". great movie good action sequences.

In the genre of Fun Junk, it delivered more than I expected and I have never seen or played the game. It's not Blade Runner, but than what is?!

It's the actor that made the movie. His delivery was great.

"What are you so upset about? I got rid of the body over an hour ago."

I think they left the details of his origin out of this movie because it's pretty complicated. Plus, it can be material for the sequel (if they have one).

I liked the supported characters, too.

ya the origin is rather long. as for the game if you like sneaking up behind people and choking them with fiber wire you will love playing hitman. the punisher video game is alot of fun but hitman has alot more to it. you can steal peoples clothes, stab em, turn on anti grav, and nail gun mode. those two cheats are great after you get the 50 cal sniper rifle. sends em flieng in the air pinned to a wall.

I tried the last game (4?), but the controls sucked. It felt clunky.

i have not played that one yet. i had two for the ps2, and just didnt like it so i bought a xbox to play that version. i like the xbox so much better for shooters. although i think the punisher is better for ps2. have you played black? not a bad game not great though.

I don't play that many games. I play on the GTAs, Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, and the occasional miscellaneous game.

13th Warrior based on Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton was supposed to suck but it's still one of my favorites.

Death Sentence rocked. I watched it with my son and a certain part in the movie inspired me to sing the line "when i was just a baby, my mama told me son, always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns" I'm friends with a guy on myspace that's in a cover band from NY that plays as far as i knew strictly rock things like The Joker and Brown Eyed Girl. The next day he posted a video of his band on NY Rocks n told me to check it out. At like 45 minutes in they played Folsom Prison Blues. Was a really cool coincidence I thought.

Vanity tells us about all these really cool obscure movies that end up being great most of the time like Hardware and Dust Devil etc. He got me and Tyler collecting Hammer Horror movies, a lot of people probably would say they suck the same movie can be a really different experience for any two people. We met talking about movies all nite online, movies and penises actually thanks to Mino.

    Hardware - Richard Stanley

Dust Devil - The Final Cut Richard Stanley

I think a lot of movies based on video games or comic books are expected to suck, but I have enjoyed a lot of them. In fact, they are some of my favorites. The Crow for example. A guy who gets murdered along with his fiance comes back to life to take revenge on those that did it. The only thing that can hurt him is if his crow is hurt. It seems like a ridiculous concept, but what a great movie!

It's a shame that Brandon Lee died during the filming.

But yes, it's a really good movie.

    Yeah, it really is.

I had heard they were planning on making The Crow a series of movies starring Brandon Lee, likely that he would punish those who did unjustice to others. Unfortunately, following his death all they could do was make Crow movies with different people, using essentially the same concept as the first movie. If you have seen them, then you will probably agree with me that most of them sucked and were not worth watching.

I won't go anywhere the near the sequel.

I also liked the soundtrack from the original movie.

soundtrack was great for the original. the only one of the sequels that i like was stairway to heaven. they had a brief stint with that as a tv show. the show was very well done. i am a fan of mark dacocus or how ever you spell his name. he kicked ass in only the strong, and cradle to the grave.

From Dusk till Dawn......Bank robber brothers run to Mexico(done how many times before) use a family to sneak across the border and then end up at a Biker Bar that's actually a vampire haven. Sounds like B-Movie material but turns into a good movie....
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

I don't recall any sci fi parts. I thought it was a fun movie in the B movie horror genre, but a B movie none the less. Ok enough rental, but no Blade in the B movie vampire movie genre, that's for sure.

The Blade movies were pretty good. The first was the best, two was good, but the third was only good because of Ryan Reynolds (but still very enjoyable).

the third was freaking funny only thing i didnt like was that hannibal king(ryan reynolds) was not still a vamp. in the night stalker comics he was one hell of a vamp. ya bro rambo kicked ass. stallone is freaking huge in the new rambo. there are a couple scenes that i had to cover my sons eyes a little to real, and a little to graphic. so head up on that if you plan on watching it with a younger person.
