Question DirecTV....and the awful cable company

I've been wanting to switch to Directv for some time now. Comcast not delivering the UCLA vs. USC game last night on FSN HD, even when it was clearly scheduled, pushed me over. When I called them up, they tried "sending" a message to my digital cable box; which did absolutely nothing. The rep then said it was FSN's fault for not sending Comcast the right signal or some bullshit like that.

For people that have Directv, are there any negatives, i.e., pay more for local channels, reception issues, etc.? I also heard Directv offers a HD DVR with Tivo.

We have DirecTv and I have no complaints/negatives so far. We still get local news, etc. Our signal has only kind of flickered once or twice within the past 8 months. I think when you first sign up that they give you a few sample channels to see if you would want to buy one of the premium packages.

Also keep in mind though that we don't have any kind of fancy TVs (yet).

What kind of premium package do you have? I am really interested in the quality of their HD channels. With Comcast, I only have 15 or so...and their DVR is a piece of shit.

I didn't have much luck with DirecTV. I liked the service, but when it rained I lost all reception. Frustrating as hell to come home to watch one of your DVR'd shows to find that it rained & nothing was recorded. I had a strong signal in the 90's, too. I switched to cable when my tv watching capabilities was determined by the weather.

At the same time, I've heard many people say they never had problem while it rained. If I was to consider it again I'd ask a neighbor how their experience with it is. Again, the service itself was great. I have Comcast but I loathe them.

I know someone who sells it and she says she feels guilty getting people to sign up for their service because of the very high complaint ratio.

really? This morning I was watching the UNC/Clemson game and what do you know? ESPN kept cutting out with the video/audio in the second half. I would love to know if satellite customers were having this problem with ESPN as well.

We have an older TV, and I'm not really into watching HD yet. I think we have the Choice XTRA package. It snowed here once or twice and our signal was a little choppy for about 30 minutes.

For the record, all the tornadoes/rain/hail that came through Atlanta/our area this weekend didn't seem to affect our reception at all.

I'm sure plenty of it depends on the weather in your area?

I live in the Bay Area so the weather shouldn't be an issue. What I want to know is if the quality of Directv's standard and HD channels is better than Comcast's?

I'm surprised no ones mentioned Fios. Brand new fiber network all the way to your house, vary fast internet, knowledgeable techs, battery back up for when the power goes out. FUCK Comcast, Fios hands down.

Dish is susceptible to stormy weather outages, thats when I really like to have TV since it's not as fun to go out and about when it's rainy. My cable rarely goes down, we had a problem with bad reception but they came in and replaced our splitter and put a booster or something on the line and now we get all the channels perfectly except for the local Korean network but I don't watch that so no biggie. As far as the dish goes you gotta hope that the tech who installs it is good at aiming it or you'll end up with a bad angle and not get the best reception. You also gotta think about solar interference which you are almost guaranteed to have twice a year when the sun passes right behind the satellite

FiOS is not available in Oakland.

Satellite (from DirecTV) always gave me trouble for the 2 years that I had it. The signal would cut out at the worst times and my dish seemed very susceptible to weather. When I moved I switched to digital cable and haven't given satellite a second thought. The picture is great, you get a decent amount of channels, and some packages even have Tivo-like capabilities. My provider is Cox Communications which covers telephone, internet, and tv. Seriously stay away from the dish, it'll cause you nothing but grief.
