Get a gun.
Hey guys,
I was just recently offered a summer intern position for a company that is located in Herndon, VA.
I need help from anyone who lives in or near Herndon and offer me advice as to where to look for temporary housing, transportation, gym locations and so forth. I have never been to Virginia in my entire life so i need some guidance to get me started.
Thanks!

Thats within 25 minutes of me, but I don't know anything specific about the area. Fairfax county has one of the highest per capita incomes and best public schools in the nation. I'm sure you'll be able to find a decent place. Try to find a place where you do not have to get on the interstate to get to and from work.
William and Mary is near there, so you might try just subletting a college-type apartment for three months.

You should be able to find housing as said below.
Herndon was one of the first "planned" suburbs, I believe. Low crime, etc. Bally gyms are there (gag). But you'll find what you need.
The District is a lot of fun, but I don't know what you're into for entertainment, if that matter to you.
Good luck on this.
Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.

seems a lot of places in that area also have fitness centers as a part of their amenity package... (know some folks moving to that area)

Do you have a car?
Yeah Fairfax is nice, I was just there last night visiting a friend. There are tons of shops and restaurants within walking distance of her place, and the apartment is brand new. My friend's 1-bedroom apartment costs about $1250 plus utilities, just to give you an idea of the price range.
I've lived in DC for my whole life, but most of my time has been spent on the Maryland side. So I wish I could give you more VA advice, but my experience there has been limited. But let me know if you need any general DC area advice.
As far as gyms go, I would look in to Gold's Gym or Sport & Health clubs. They are pretty solid establishments, with Sport & Health on the higher end. You might be able to find a great hole-in-the-wall gym if you're lucky, but I don't know any off the top of my head. Avoid Bally's like the plague, the ones I've been to are very poorly run, and try to suck you in to a 3-year contract that is impossible to get out of.
Oh and one more thing.... living near the Metro Rail is really nice. Especially if you want to tour DC (parking can be tough to find), or if you like to go get wasted at the bars. I guess the closest stop would be the Fairfax stop, so you might want to look into that. Metro - Metrorail System Map
I will be renting a car or buying a used car because i will need one. Once school is out, i am driving down there with my father along with everything i need for my apartment as soon as i get one. The HR manager provided some links and told me to check out housing availability at George Mason University.

I think that is a pretty decent deal considering the amount of money they will be paying me per hour. It should be a good experience.
Squanto, thanks for the info. I'll look around and see what i can find.
