McCain Booed During MLK Speech : The New Argument

On the 40th anniversary of the tragic assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Sen. John McCain was booed after declaring he had made a mistake in 1983 by not voting for a holiday in the civil rights leader’s honor. See the clip after the jump.

what kind of moron votes against a national holiday for MLK?
Chuck Norris once lost his keys and couldn't remember where he put them. So he tortured himself for half an hour until he gave up their location.

Why is it that as a college student, I get MLK day off, but not President's day.

Someone who doesn't fell the need for another token holiday.
So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.

Why are people booing at a man who has just admitted his mistake and says that he was wrong?

OJ Simpson was a broadcaster back then, and OJ commented the people voted against it because a lot of people didn't want to pay for it.

Holidays cost a lot of money.

Not sure of McCain's particular reasons (voters possbly?).

It's a person right to vote against a holiday if they want to vote against it.

As for MLK, yes he was a unique man. I respect MLK.

All the Presidents in American history share one day.

All the veteran who gave their lives for our country share one day.

MLK has a day all to himself.

Wait until 2027 when the FBI files are released. We'll see how highly people regard him then.

Oh yeah, I can't wait. 2027 is going to rock when we finally get to see how MLK was a dirty evil nigger. Right?

That is strange. I posted a comment about why I thought he shouldn't, but apparently I refreshed before it posted. I'll try to retype it as best I can remember:

I respect McCain for admitting he made a mistake, or at least what he believed to be a mistake. I don't consider it a mistake.
MLK was a great man and a great black leader. He believed in education, love, self responsibility. He had said many times that he could not hate white people for how blacks were treated, because he would be contradicting himself. He knew that he would probably be assassinated but went on fighting for his people. He was a man of virtue and integrity.

But, he is not the only man in US History to have these qualities. Many men have lived just as incredible lives as he did. They don't get their own day, so I don't really give a shit if MLK gets his own day or not.

People could better honor MLK's memory by following his example, and not taking a day off. If the black community lived by his example, race relations would be farther than they are today. The black community needs another black leader like MLK instead of the pieces of shit like Jackson, and Sharpton.

Thats not exact, but the idea is the same.

    A fair assessment.

I've only seen two black "leaders" these days who preach anything near what MLK taught. A black minister (I forget his name) and, of all people, Bill Cosby. Both of which got the verbal beat-down by other black "leaders" and by a lot of blacks in general.

On a side note, MLK was a big time adulterer. So don't be quite so quick to link him to self-responsibility.

I'm hate filled, but you aren't. You are just shooting your mouth off about something you know absolutely zero about because of your perceptions of the person making an opinion statement. There is no spite in that at all.

What I was talking about was the wire tapping of King authorized by Robert Kennedy. King had known ties to the communist party, that is a fact. The extent of which is largely unknown, because the files are sealed. It is also a known fact that he had extramarital affairs. Again, the extent and nature are largely unknown, many people believe white prostitutes were involved. Whether that is a truthful leak of information or just rumor will be made clear when the files are unsealed.

On top of that, a 1991 study revealed extensive plagiarism in many of his speeches and academic works. So he is already a known communist supporter, academic cheater, and marital cheater. Based on these three character indicia alone, one could form the opinion that the additional unknown facts may be largely negative.

Any black man who believes that people of his race can succeed on their own, without handouts and without race-baiting, is called an Uncle Tom by the larger movement led by Sharpton and Jackson.

Add Clarence Thomas to your list.

I know. My point was that his not the saint that people like to believe.

The 90s saw the vilification of white historical figures and the sanctification of black historical figures. Just another example of racial equality.

Pretty substantive. Saying you're filled with hate, while insulting you himself and telling you "no one likes you on this internet forum!" is full of substance (and irony).

I am very interested to see the FBI files on MLK. I knew they existed, but I didn't know that they would ever be released.
