fufu's first submission wrestling competition (vids)
Well, I've been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 3 1/2 months now with no prior wrestling experience. Since I grapple better without the gi, the heavy uniform you see in alot of martial arts competitions, my teacher suggested I compete in a no-gi submission wrestling tournement in Albany, NY.
I decided to go, pretty nervous about the whole thing. The experience and weight classes were limited. There were two experience classes, under 2 years and over. That does not include 4 year of high school wrestling either. I had to compete in the 202.5 weight class at 188.2 lbs. The next weight class below was 176 and I've never tried to cut water weight before so I decided to just go in at my natural weight. Anyway, I competed in 4 tournament matches. I lost in the first bracket but won my next two matches and ended up competing for third place where I lost to points 13-18 in a six minute match. It was cool to be able to hang with and beat more experienced grapplers. A couple coaches from other academies came up to me and said they hope to see me competing again and say I'll go places if I keep it up. I couldn't get the video of the 6 minute match up but here are my first three matches. I'm the shaved head guy with the vale tudo shorts -
The guy who beat me by submission went onto the advanced division and won the whole thing. I really fucked up when I went for that sloppy arm bar. I won my second match by guillotine choke and my next one by a rolling guillotine/neck crank from mount. I was so nervous for this thing, I felt sick. I didn't remember much of any of the matches after I was done, I didn't even remember what my opponents looked like. |

Great job, fufu!
You may have lost that first match, but that was a nice job getting out of that first RNC. I really thought that he had you, but you got out. Nice. I've never done any sort of wrestling; I've only done Muy Thai, and now Krav Maga. Watching your first match, I kept shouting in my mind stuff like, "Kick him in the face! Go for the groin! Bite him!." |

One of my teammate's opponents popped a rib during the match, that was probably the worst injury. |

that is true, there is alot I can be doing better, once technique is supplemented with strength it turns into a dangerous combo Actually, I didn't feel anything. I never feel anything during the match, just after. I'm sore all over today. I'm sure that slam contributed to how I feel right now, heh. It was kind of a relief though, I'm much more comfortable working from the ground. It is fun to watch though, hohoho |

fu,
Summer is quickly approaching and I'll know more about what it is I'm going to be doing this summer as time goes on. With work from 9-5 Monday through Friday, a potential internship, working out, and a social life.. I don't know if I'll have enough time. I do know that I will be doing something out of the ordinary this summer though, whether that be training to compete in a powerlifting competition, getting a personal training certification, or something inbetween. Your videos are certainly inspiring though. Like I said, cool stuff. |

thanks
My school doesn't train takedowns too much. I wasn't about to try to pull some moves I hardly train. This competition was a little different from something like NAGA. They look down on pulling guard and no butt scooting allowed. The scoring is aimed heavily on takedowns so I was either waiting to get taken down or sprawling and trying to climb to a better position. |
