    Vomiting

    Hey guys,

I threw up several times this morning due to food poisoning .. (i think?) so i have some questions.

Last night, i had a bbq dinner with a bunch of friends and we ate steak, chicken, rice, hotdogs and so forth. A couple hours later, my stomach started feeling a little queasy and i woke up several times throughout the night because i had to vomit. It was painful and was the first time i've been this sick since 4-5 years ago.

My question is, how much does vomiting set you back in terms of body health and maintaining your gains? It's hard for me to eat today and i only ate some grapes, rice and a little bit of pasta. In addition, i also have been drinking a lot of water.

What are some major side effects when it comes to vomiting? Does a particular vomit color mean anything? I was puking brown and then later it was dark green (like the color of spinach even though i didn't eat any) so would you mind helping me out here?

This is officially my worst birthday ever. I slept all day today.

lovely, haha. on a serious note, i don't honestly know if the color matters, but from what you have had today it certainly won't hurt you. i don't THINK it will hurt you much.

So long as you hydrate, and don't puke too much, you should be fine.

Yeah, staying hydrated and recovering is the thing you need to worry about.

As long as it's not reddish or black you should be fine, if you are able to keep food and liquids down then it seems the worst is over. BBQ chicken is the most probable culprit since most people end up under cooking it most often, it has to be slow cooked over a long period not like searing steaks.....that's why I usually slice chicken breasts thin and then it can be cooked faster......

Drink gatorade, it'll hydrate you, give some carbs for energy and replace vital electrolytes. Try small meals that will digest quickly, you want to quicken gastric emptying in this case to get as much of the food into your intestines for absorption as possible. Try laying on your left side (helps empty stomach into via gravity).

As far as color goes, it'll be greenish/brown from the bile. As long as it doesn't look like coffee grounds (lower GI bleed)or red like blood (upper GI bleed) you'll be fine.

If it goes into tomorrow go see a doc. Might give you some sort of antibiotic or just an antiemetic like reglan (Metoclopromide) to inhibit vomiting and increase GI motility.

You didn't list the amount of booze you drank.

One night of throwing up won't hurt your gains. You're probably back to full-mode, right now.

Hey, you're young and with friends on a birthday. That's a good thing.

Just be happy you didn't wake up to vomit all over your clothes/bed.

    It could be worse...

Could have just been a stomach bug, and you can pick that up anywhere. If it was food poisoning, other people at the party would have gotten sick too. Your stomach will probably be sore for a few days. It won't have any impact on you long term.

My wife's aunt served up some bad turkey once at a holiday. Everyone who ate some had the shits for two days.

If he had drank booze he would see yellow puke once all the food had been tossed, believe me I know.....

Ha, about the booze, i was going to drink once all of my friends arrived but my stomach started acting up and i had to leave. I knew something was up and was predicting a night of vomiting and it turned out to be true. Good thing i listened to my body.

I agree it was just the stomach bug. My friends didn't have any problems after they ate so it was only me.

Smoothy - I got a summer internship in Virginia. I will be working for Booz Allen Hamilton as a Financial Analyst. Should be interesting.

Been there, more than a few times. It's a horrible wretched feeling retching up that evil tasting thick bile.

Just the thought makes me shiver.
