This isn't news. Not even remotely. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a Sherlock Holmes adventure (circa 1898 or so) around the fact that panhandlers make way more than the average bloke. I think it was titled The Man With The Hairline Lip.

I was wrong about the title. It's called The Man With The Twisted Lip (over a wiki).

Yeah my Dad told me he would watch a guy in greasy tattered clothes work the corner near his work and then walk around to the back lot of his work building and change into nice clothes and drive off in his BMW....

Yeah i read about a guy in Manhattan that would panhandle around Wall Street and make good money. He had a place in the city and a girl friend i believe. The guy was living better than me.

I always figured panhandlers made more money than most thought, but I didn't think it would be that much.
In really big cities bums mostly stand where people walk by, but in average size cities they always go to an intersection with a long red light. You feel more generous if you are in an air conditioned car and they are outside sweating. I remember I alway used to see this bum on the way to the gym. Pretty much any time there were 5 or more cars stopped at the light, someone would give him money. |

Wal-Mart pays pretty well, I got my first job in High School there working as a Cart Pusher and made $7 an hour plus lots of over time and then they moved me to cashier at $8.50 but I was a hard worker and they wanted me to come back after the Navy to be a Manager. My Aunt who worked there for 20+ years is doing pretty well in retirement with her stock options through the company...

I remember reading a story about a man who would wear a suit and tie and hang around Wall St. walking up to other bankers/businessmen...claiming he was just robbed and lost his wallet, phone, briefcase and needed $20 for a cab ride home. He's claim he worked for some investment banking firm and would ask for their card after they gave him the $20 so he could pay them back.
This guy would pull thousands everyday...sneaky SOB. I got to admire his unique approach though. Screw asking for a buck here or there, just ask for a $20, look credible and say you can pay them back. |

Years ago in Brooklyn I used to drive on the BQE Expressway and during traffic jams you always saw this bum with a crooked leg begging for money, he was there for years.
Well it was a scam, it wasn't one guy it was twins pulling this scam, I saw them walking normal on the sidewalks of Brooklyn....Bedford Ave. and South 1 st. buying drugs.... A few years later though I saw one of them and I guess from all those years of faking a disability Karma gave him one for keeps. |

Hey I've seen trailers that put my house to shame. I remember my Mom wanted to buy a triple wide "modular" which is a nice way of saying trailer home. This place had 4 bedrooms, with a jacuzzi tub in the Master Bedroom and a walk-in porch off of the master bedroom, it had a family room and then a living room which was a drop-in type. It had a fireplace in the livingroom and master bedroom.....it also had vaulted ceilings.....

Freakin bums. We flew out to Cali. one year to see my wife's family. We were leaving somewhere..LAX, don't remember, but anyway there was this "homeless" woman sleeping on a bench. My father-in-law thought it would be kind to leave her a few bucks, so he quietly walked over and tucked a twenty dollar bill in next to her gear. As he walked off, the old broad jumped up, balled the twenty up, yelled "fuck you!" and threw it at him as he walked away. His expression...priceless.![]() |

"no shit" The homeless in detroit used to try to shake people down for cash... I dont know how many groups of girls or kids, my buddies and I interviened from getting shaken down (robbed) by panhandlers and supposed homeless people... 99.9% of anyone on the street is chemically imbalanced and unable to hold a job or conform to society... I think they should all be scooped up and shipped to the glue factory. Maybe we can burn 'em up, and make some electricity, or fertilizer for a bamboo farm or something. ![]() |

If you guys find yourselves in Waikiki don't give money to the blind man who has a sign saying he is an unfortunate victim of a government related accident or something to that effect. I watched him in another part of town stop and read a menu in the window of a restaurant one day, it was totally amazing to see this guy who I'd seen hundreds of times and thought was really blind completely out of character. I guess he makes his money from the gullible tourists and doesn't care if locals know the truth...

this reminds me of a time I was visiting a friend in Chicago, sitting in McDonalds eating, and a beggar came around asking for money saying he wanted to get something to eat, and my friend said "Hey, I dont have any money, but I have a second sandwich here that Im not going to eat, you can have it." It was still wrapped up, untouched...
The guy just walked away hahahah, I couldnt believe it |

Coming home from Fenway once, I gave all my change to a bum.
To make a long story short, I was able to get on the "T" because going home is free, but when I got to my stop, I didn't have enough money to take the bus home. I ended up walking along the highway and a measly 2 minute walk had I been able to take the bus turned into a 30-60 minute hike. Moral of the story, don't give all your money to bums when you're going to need some of it to pay for a bus ride home. |
