I'm sure many of you will understand why I'm upset, but at the same time its out of my control.

Basically, I've been a contractor at my job for 2 years. I'm in the final phase of becoming permanent, except Corporate is taking FOREVER in getting one signature to seal the deal. In order to actually apply for my job, it has to be posted on our company web site and I have to apply directly, but it's also available for everyone to see and apply for, which is understandable.

The part I'm upset about, is my boss just told me I have competition, in that someone else is now applying. While I do know my department wants me here and they've already started the hiring process, the fact that I know who it is that's applied rather irritates me. I guess my boss should have kept it private, but she flat out told me which she most likely shouldn't have.

What do you say? Wouldn't you be upset in a situation like this, or am I overreacting? I know I have no control over the situation, but just felt the need to vent.

I'll try to be nicer, if you'll try to be smarter.

I wouldn't get too upset just yet.

Is the other applicant someone who you have worked with? Or did they just come out of nowhere?

I'm thinking that they, based on the system you describe, would have to allow others to apply out of fairness and as not to show favoritism.

Who will make the decision on who gets hired?

The working world blows dick. Being self-employed has its downside, but I sure as hell don't miss office politics or general corporate stupidity.

The other applicant is someone who works here on site. They work in another department outside of mine, but I occasionally "work" with all members here on site in regards to anything they might need, such as ordering products or help with equipment.

As you mentioned, they do need to allow others to apply out of fairness.

Well, from what I hear my department was on a hiring freeze for a while. I have two bosses, but I only report to one of them but still see both on a daily basis and do any work they need me to complete. All of the forms have been processed, I had my interview and even spoke to Corporate HR. The only thing that needs to be done is getting one final signature from Corporate HR to approve of my open req, in order for me to become hired. Once that happens all lights are go and I can worry no longer.

Well then you know why they are doing it. I wouldn't worry about it. Just like said previously, they have to pretend like they are being fair about it, but you already know you have the job.

It could be worse. You could be the other people applying who have no chance of getting the job, but are being hopeful right now.

The company that I have been consulting for for the last 7 years has threatened to make me permanent a few times already but so far I have been able to dodge that bullet.

Consulting is the way to go, if you have the knowledge and skills to back it up. Permanent sucks, or at least in the tech industry. What industry are you in?

Relax. They are legally obligated to review all candidates who meet the minimum specified qualifications. The Department of Labor has some pretty strict rules about this sort of thing.

Now I don't know what kind of work you are involved in but if your company does any work at all with the government you MUST comply with all Dept of Labor regulations lest you run the risk of losing all your government contracts.

Basically, it's a legal formality. However, If I were you, I'd recognize that there just might be some serious competition out there. You need to have your best game face on. If your employer gets any indication that you feel you are "entitled" to the job because you've been doing it for so long, they might just shit-can you on the spot.

Be competitive.

Just some honest advice.

That's the idea, but you need a few years industry experience before a lot of other companies will trust that you know what you're doing. Hell as a college grad I know more about Cisco and Linux than many administrators, but I have no experience.

Just thought I'd throw out there that I work in Information Technology, and that we basically service everyone here on site. It's amazing how many people are brain dead when it comes to simple things.

My boss told me what was said between her and the other woman who applied, I couldn't help but laugh. The applicant said she was WAY over qualified for the position, which I find rather funny as it took her almost a year to properly fill out a single form that she's filled out many times. Qualified? I think not.

and if you like relocating every 3-6months and living on an airplane. The pay can be great if you have the experience. Everyone I know gets burnt out in that industry over the course of 2-4 years and switches gears.

I am broke, and I need to make some money. I am young, and wouldn't mind traveling around for a while. It would be perfect for me except I am fresh out of school, so fuck me.
