Question Anyone know any current specials on computers?

I need a new PC. My Dell Dimension 8200 has lasted me 6 years, but it is now making ungodly noises.

I prefer another Dell since this one lasted me so long, but perhaps one of you out there know of some specials going on. I dont have enough time to build one considering I work more and I am moving out, so I need a prebuilt one.

I use my computer for internet, latest video games, and school work. Basically, I need a top notch one.

Well, either you want a top notch computer or you want a pre-built. The only pre-built that is powerful is from Alienware, but they're very overpriced.

You could just buy a decent Dell, and then add some more memory and a stand-alone video card.

You could also see if someone in your area will build one for you and charge a reasonable rate.

Oh christ, I forgot about Alienware and yes...paying over $2K is a bit steep. This computer that is dying cost me just over $1K.

I priced a custom built for a friend, using parts at retail price, that was comparable to an Alienware computer. Everything was the same. The same parts at the same quality. I even included the purchase of the OS (Windows XP Pro). The price came to 65% of the Alienware model, which retailed for $2800. That's a difference of over $1800. Not even remotely worth it.

If your computer is 6 years old you aren't playing todays games, unless you mean todays Texas Hold'em.

The noise is likely a fan, if it is or was the hard drive it'll be dead within a week. I call this one 'the click of death,' click........ click.......... click.......... If this is the case, stop using it RIGHT NOW go buy a drive that will work in your 'ancient PC' and Ghost it.

By now its got some mad dust inside of it, could be the CPU fan too.

If its just a noisy power supply, 40 bucks will get you going again.

    Newegg.com - CyberpowerPC Gamer Infinity 7300 Core 2 Quad Q6600(2.40GHz) 2GB DDR2 500GB NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT Windows Vista Home Premium - Desktop PCs

I purchased this computer in December and am pretty damn happy with it...I havent pushed its limits at all, and am not a gamer so I suppose my uses don't match yours, but the graphics card is good, not the best, but good enough.

It has room for upgrade which is a must for me, it seems impossible to buy a computer from the shelves of stores like Best Buy anymore (HP, Gateway...ect) if you want a computer that you want to tinker with in the future, I tried getting one as I was really impatient at the time, and was very disappointed when I opened up the pc....

Does Newegg do payment plans? I see its pretty cheap (under $1K) for that one.

I guess I want to start anew. Even get a new montior. I might be the only bastard out there without a flat screen.

I'll give you this: do NOT install Vista. Thousands of vista users, myself included, can't play 3D applications, like games.

i got rid of horrible noises of death by replacing a hard drive and cleaning the fans. you could at least do that so you don't completely kill it before you get a new one. if i believed the noises i'd have replaced this one years ago. was just the hard drive it came with was a piece of crap.

Don't look back ~ You're not going that way!

I've had a hard drive doing the click of death for about 7 months now. I don't care about the stuff on it, I'm just amazed it's still going - it just keeps on trucking.

I agree, Vista never really impressed me.

I think XP is better and apparently so does Microsoft...they are not killing it yet.

It even better than that...or worse if you're Microsoft.

Microsoft now allows you to use Vista keys on Windows XP. Just throw in an XP CD, use the phone activation option. Then tell them you're installing Windows XP with a Vista key. Boom. You're activated.

Yes, but you still need to get the CD, an east feat, and you'll need to find all the drivers; which may not be so easy.

The newer games I see out either require Vista or have a compatability with it...

I thought Vista was only bad shit if its added to an older machine. However, for a higher powered machine, its fine.

No such thing as a top quality brand. All of the venders use the same parts. The only difference is customer service. Gateway, Dell, HP, and Compaq all have shitty customer service. Bestbuy has the all time worst steaming turd of a customer service department. Never ever ever buy from bestbuy.

I have bought tens of thousands of dollars of stuff from newegg for myself and clients. They have the best prices, fastest shipping, and most no hassle customer service department. I would recommend newegg to anyone.

Only DirectX 10 games require Vista. Even then, the video drivers for Vista are still problematic. So don't count on seeing many DirectX 10 games soon.

No, Vista is a crap OS. It's offers nothing more beyond XP other than a resource crushing visual enhancement. The security is also suppose to be better, but it's Microsoft that we're talking about. Even on new hardware, it runs like shit.

Vista is just another Windows Me.

Ok, Ive read aother thread about Vista so let me ask this...

Lets say I call up one of these companies and tell them which parts I want in my new computer...would it be too much to ask if I wanted them to pre-install XP and not Vista?

I coulda sworn in the other threads I read that theyd do this..

Microsoft are dickheads that made deals with many of the computer companies, so most venders will not sell machines with XP. As a matter of fact, many computer companies have a stipulation that if you format Vista, then reinstall XP, it voids your warranty. Circuit City has that on their HP machines. I recommend checking around to find a vender that will ship you a machine with hardware that is both XP and Vista compatible and that comes with XP. It that situation, worst case scenario is that you will have to spend an extra $100 and install it yourself. Its still worth it.

Some companies install vista/xp and configure all the parts (if you're buying a custom build pc, which I'd highly recommend). It shouldn't be a problem though, because a lot of stores can configure everything for you as well. It might cost you an additional 50$ though.

Edit: situation is obviously different in the USA. ^ Kelju's post.

@ scarface: most people can, but thousands don't and believe me, it's #@%^&$@%$. Check out the length of this thread.

Closing the Door to Microsoft Vista

Closing the Door to Microsoft Vista - BusinessWeek.com - MSNBC.com

General Motors (GM) may take a detour around Vista, the latest computer operating system from Microsoft (MSFT). The automaker has encountered so many speed bumps getting Vista to work on its machines that it may just wait for the next version of Windows, due in 2010 or 2011. "We're considering bypassing Vista and going straight to Windows 7," says GM's Chief Systems & Technology Officer Fred Killeen.
Vista taxes all but the most modern PCs with hefty processing and memory requirements. Many of GM's PCs can't even run the system. "By the time we'd replace them, Windows 7 might be ready anyway," Killeen says. Then there are compatibility problems with all the software that needs to run on Windows. GM's software vendors still haven't ensured all their programs will run on Vista trouble-free. So the company is sticking with Windows XP for now. Killeen figures GM could install Windows 7 in three or four years.

I prefer another Dell since this one lasted me so long, but perhaps one of you out there know of some specials going on. I dont have enough time to build one considering I work more and I am moving out, so I need a prebuilt one.

I use my computer for internet, latest video games, and school work. Basically, I need a top notch one.
it's hard to beat Dell's price IMO, and I think they produce quality products and back them up.

It always makes me laugh on the back of Game boxes that the minimum system requirements for your PC are always vastly higher if your OS is Vista.

Sometimes they even have XP and Vista on the same box, and its fucking hilarious.

But yeah, i agree with most of whats been said. If you buy a pre-built you'll generally need THEM to come fix it (goddamn those "warranty is void if removed" stickers) so get good CS department.

I built my PC 2 or 3 years ago for a grand, and at the start of this year my best mate bought one pre-built for £600 which is slightly better than mine in every way. Sometimes PB is the way to go.
