    Exclamation Data Recovery Services..Need Input!

so my external hard drive stopped working..says drive is inaccessible. being a Maxtor, I sent it to them. They gave me a quote of just over $1000. Obviously, this would really be a stretch for me to pay. I was wondering if anyone else has done a data recovery and which company they used.

Is the drive spinning? Clicking? Does it just plain do nothing when it is plugged in? Have you tried it in a different power rail or computer to confirm that it isn't a case of a bad power supply line?

Need more information to be able to tell you anything.

i don't hear any clicking..and yes it does nothing when plugged in. My computer recognizes it being there, but it says drive is inaccessible when I try to open it. I've tried using different ports..same result. It fucked up a week ago when I tried to run SoulSeek. for some reason, it just crashed...

Download a burn an Ubuntu Live CD. Leave your external drive attached and turned on. Boot from the Live CD and see if you can access your drive. If it does work at all, copy over just the important files first, and do it one folder at a time.

It's an operating system, which is what Windows is. The Live CD allows you to boot fully into Ubuntu without installing anything on your comptuer. It'll connect to all of your hard drive. Maybe even the malfunctioning one. If that happens, you can copy the data over to one of your other hard drives.

I've done that for a couple of clients. It does work, just not all the time. But it's better than nothing.

You can download Ubuntu here. Just burn the image, put it in the CD drive, and restart the computer. If you get a prompt to boot from the CDROM, do it. Then, if the broken drive mounts, copy the data over. Once you're done, take out the CD are restart the computer. You'll boot to windows and have any files you copied.

If you need more help, just let me know.

There are both CD and DVD versions. The CD version should work just fine.
