You work for a high profile conglomerate pharmicutical company.

You're not long in the job, but you find out that the new OTC drug they are producing has some very harmful side effects, so bad that certain people will have a really violent reaction and die if they take it.

The company finds out. They offer you $1 million to say nothing.

Do you take the money?

Or

Do you blow the whistle?

I'd hold out for more money--- then keep my mouth shut...

It would only mean a couple of lives, and there would be an investigation and lawsuits... Justice would eventually be served.

I know theres no way I could give up that much money...
say $5m?

some really wouldn't. my peace of mind is not for sale. it's one thing to support the deaths of violent criminals, it's quite another to let your greed cause the deaths of some child's mother, some mother's child... i'd rather be poor and fall asleep with the ease of a guilt free child and i do.

I don't mean to steal your thread goob, but what about this scenario: they pay you 1000000$ to test it on 10 thousand people but the knowledge you gain from this test will save the lives of 10 million people?

most drugs do have side effects that will cause serious harm and even death to certain people don't they? known risks? like women of a certain age on birth control pills who smoke heavily.

Tylenol kills several people each year. That's due mainly to overdosing, but it seems that overdosing on Tylenol isn't that difficult. Combining even a small amount of Tylenol with alcohol can cause irreversible liver failure.

i think it was tylenol that was tampered with years ago and people were poisoned? i think taking meds is a gamble, who the hell knows what psycho was near it on it's way to you. still, i think there's no excuse for any individual to cover up risks to others for profit.

That was back in the early 80s.

On a related note, as soon as the makers (Bristol-Meyers?) of Tylenol found out that there product had been tampered with, they pull every last bottle off the shelves with zero input from anyone else.

As a result of that incident, they became the first company to institute the first temper-resistant containers on all of their products. Again, without being told to.

I only take medications when I really have to. Which is generally limited to aspirin and NyQuil w/sudafed (not at the same time).

if i went along with it my kids pediatrician would have them on so many meds they'd be zombies. it's ridiculous. even allergy medication i see no sense in taking all damn year for seasonal issues. doctors are serious pill pushers with the same damn financial incentive as street drug dealers.

Quite often, they get kickbacks for prescribing medications. I don't know if that's illegal, but it should be. That's a serious conflict of interest.

J&J make Tylenol and save billions in brand equity b/c of the move back then. The primary motive wasn't out corporate social responsibility .

I voted no...but I would first offer say 5 million to keep my mouth shut based on they have to pull the drug from the shelves ASAP. I can keep my trap shut to cover up a mistake, but not allow something like that to keep happening to more people.
