hmm frank sinatras i wont dance. b-52s love shack. then greatful deads standing on the moon. three songs spring back memories from when i was very young when life was much simpler.

What song, or songs, take you back in the years and why?
My first song is the Mamas and the Pappas singing California Dreamin'. It's the first song that I can remember having heard; and I have memories going back to when I was two. I remember being very young and having no cares whatsoever.
My second song is The Rhinestone Cowboy by Glen Campbell. My mom is big on country/western and use to play this at least once a day when I was a child. It was also on the first tape that I ever owned (I was 6 years old at the time).

Bjork - Venus as a boy. One of the songs I loved while I lived in the Orient. Takes me back there.
When I used to skate all the time. A good song to get me hyped up. Sucky band, but superb song. Offspring - Dirty Magic.

Man, too many to list! I guess from childhood, I remember laying in the backseat of our old station wagon (I called it chity chity bang bang...keep in mind, I was only four or five, lol) listening to songs like America's a horse with no name, and stuff by Boz Scaggs, The Eagles, and a bunch random Pop stuff. One song always got me, Cats in the cradle, by Harry Chapin....it always made me sad. Now, as a parent, I can really relate to it...and try my damndest not to immulate it.
After surviving the Disco era, we got into all kind of stuff in high school. Everything from The Doors to Billy Joel....Billy got me out of some tough spots.
Then in college, nothing but alternative and rougher stuff. From Black Flag to R.E.M...If I hear New Year's Day (U2) I feel like I'm standing in the middle of the dorm halls at U.S.C. again. Cool.![]()

Cool, D.
We had our Blues Jam here last night, and I was talking to the guys about how cool the imagery was in certain songs. (in this case, Blues)...That America tune is a great example. I think I had started playing The Ballad of Curtis Lowe (one of the few Skynard tunes I can now tolerate) ....hence the conversation.
Since the 80's music has taken a downturn in respect to solid imagery, IMO.

2 live crew - Me so horny: The first time I heard this was when I heard my older brother playing it. This was before CDs were out, and I had never heard vulgar music before. I stole his tape, and made a copy on my boombox. I then carried the tape to school on my walkman. I was letting all my friends hear it. My teacher saw the huge commotion that was created when half of the class was huddled around me listening and laughing at recess. She made me let her listen to it. This was about the time my career as the class trouble maker started. I was a legend in third grade.

about 20 years ago i lived in a town n went to a lot of parties, hosted a lot of parties. no one ever danced at these parties. then one night at my place this came on
and the dancing started in the living room and spread through the whole house. and ended with the song. it was definitely a very cool party moment.

I love them because my dad was a big fan of all five groups and we listened to all of them all the time in the car when he and I would go out on drives together. I really feel like I connect better with my dad than with my mom, he and I spent a lot of time together and I think a lot of his temperment rubbed off on me (very passive type b personality - only spoke when he had something to say, and he was usually right and even handed)
I love you dad!

The earliest memory was this Aussie import from the early 1960's. . .we'd listen to this in the station wagon on Sunday drives to the lake:
Sixth grade. . .and we performed these two songs in the elementary school talent show:
In junior high, everyone had a neighborhood band. I played keyboards and sang lead vocal on a cover of the Monkees "Daydream Believer" at our one and only gig for a party:
Then came the end of the Sixties and the music was changing. . .the Beatles were gonna break up, and the Motown acts were all becoming establishment. I was in high school watching variety shows at night with my friends on the television and the hit musical HAIR came out, which produced a huge number of Top 40 hits by the Cowsills and the Fifth Dimension's Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In. At the age of 25, the Supremes had turned glam:
And the radical years. . .long hair, waterpipes, and graduation - and the theme was totally American Pie. Every young person knew this song:

There are just too many, I really don't know where to start.....i'm going back 30 plus years.

oh ya forgot one the pixies were is my mind. also travis tritt love of a woman, and best of intentions. the travis tritt songs were the first to songs my wife and i ever danced to.

Earliest song I can remember was Fleetwood Mac - Dreams, maybe my mom listened to it a lot while I was in the womb cause all I visualize for the song is darkness.....not to mention Stevies voice is like the sweetest lullaby to my ears
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012
