Thumbs down Schoolboys disciplined for 'refusing to pray to Allah'

Schoolboys disciplined for 'refusing to pray to Allah' - Telegraph

Two schoolboys were allegedly disciplined after refusing to kneel down and "pray to Allah" during a religious education lesson.

It was claimed that the boys, from a year seven class of 11 and 12-year-olds, were given detention after refusing to take part in a practical demonstration of how Allah is worshipped.
Yesterday parents accused the school of breaching their human rights by forcing them to take part in the exercise.
One, Sharon Luinen, said: "This isn't right, it's taking things too far. I understand that they have to learn about other religions. I can live with that but it is taking it a step too far to be punished because they wouldn't join in Muslim prayer.
"Making them pray to Allah, who isn't who they worship, is wrong and what got me is that they were told they were being disrespectful."
Another parent Karen Williams, 38, whose 12-year-old daughter is a classmate of the boys, said: "I am absolutely furious my daughter was made to take part in it and I don't find it acceptable.
"The teacher had gone into the class and made them watch a short film and then said 'we are now going out to pray to Allah'.
"Then two boys got detention and all the other children missed their refreshments' break."
She added: "Not only was it forced upon them, my daughter was told off for not doing it right.
"They'd never done it before and they were supposed to do it in another language."
She said the pupils were asked if they had water on them, and when one girl produced a bottle, the teacher began washing her feet with it.
Her husband Keith, 44, a painter and decorator, said: "The school is wonderful but this one teacher has made a major mistake. It seems to be happening throughout society. People think they can ride roughshod over our beliefs and the way we live."
The alleged incident, at the Alsager school, one of Cheshire's top performing schools, happened on Tuesday afternoon. The teacher, Alison Phillips, the school's subject leader in RE, is understood to be staying away from the school until the furore dies down, although she has not been suspended.
She is said to have got prayer mats out of the cupboard and also asked children to wear Islamic headdresses.
Deputy headmaster Keith Plant said: "I have spoken to the teacher and she has articulately given me her version of events."
Sources at the school said the incident could have been down to Miss Phillips instigating a role play and not properly briefing the pupils, all aged around 12, what she was doing.
A spokesman for Cheshire County Council said they were investigating. He added: "The headteacher contacted the authority immediately complaints were received. Enquiries are being made into the circumstances as a matter of urgency and all parents will be informed accordingly.
"Educating children in the beliefs of different faiths is part of Cheshire's diversity curriculum on the basis that knowledge is, of course, is essential to understanding.
"We accept that such teaching has to be conducted with commonsense and sensitivity."

Yeah, teach them about it...don't make them do it. Show a video or explain how they pray in their religion, for fuck's sake.

Hey, heres an idea, we're gonna teach the kids about Nazism so why don't we go gas a few Jews at the end of class?

I understand learning through doing but if it's on a sensitive subject like religion then the school should require a take home form explaining the activities and then let the parents and children decide to opt out.

I was happy when in third grade our cultural learning teacher would bring foods, clothes, toys and candy in from the varying cultures and that whole day we would pretend to be in that culture. I learned a lot more that way than what I would have through a book or movie. My favorite was when we studied Japanese culture, I'd never used chopsticks before then and I learned how to use them there. Had I not learned I would have felt foolish moving here to Hawaii where I have used them on hundreds of occasions such as parties where the serving utensils were chopsticks and nothing else.

no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

Taking the time to learn how to eat with chopsticks was well worth it. Now i dont have to embarrass myself by asking for a fork when we go out to eat.

The waiter seemed incredibly pleased when i told him i could finally do it :P

I dont mean to generalize, but i think Islam is one of the most corrupted religion ever. My opinion is most likely biased, as i am a christian but many of teh seemingly pushy and idiotic christians are like that because...well they simply are, that and ignorance. But i notice in Islam, while there are many devout and wholesome individuals, many individuals use the religion as a device to perform their own personal agendas.

The problem stems from the fact that like it or not, kids will believe anything an adult tells them, and with a subject as confusing as religion i think its best not to tell them anything about it until they're old enough to grasp the concept that there are many different beliefs.

When my kids come to that stage, they can choose whatever the hell they like to worship, but until then ill save them the confusion and they can be atheists.

Going off personal experience, the whole issue left me confused as hell for years as a child, i don't think it's fair.

Did the lesson on Islam include the 9/11 attacks? The suicide bombings in Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel? How about the constant murders/bombings in Southern Thailiand? The Philippines? How about the mullahs of Iran sending children rolling across the battlefield in the Iran-Iraq war to clear minefields with their bodies in the name of martyrdom. Let's teach them about what Islam has done in the past 25 years and then let them make their own decision about whether they want to pray to allah.
