In refining crafts, niger is a color. Niger was a color before "nigger" was a raciest term. Many other countries still use the term to describe black. It is pronounced "nigor" I think from Spanish. When the Spanish were doing slave trading, they nicknamed black slaves nigers,, aka in Spanish "blacks". What southern slave owners continued using the name as just a way of saying black slaves.

Just a piece of worthless trivia for ya.

Actually with almost all of our words nigger got it's start in Latin. Nigr starts many words, take nigrify which means to blacken or nigrescence to become dark I've used the word in a poem to mean fade to black it got it's start as nigrēscere. Sole nigrēscere means to get a tan....
