Starbucks Gets Pleas Not to Close Stores

By JANET ADAMY and ANNA PRIOR
    July 21, 2008; Page A3

Now that Starbucks Corp. has disclosed the 600 locations it wants to shutter, a phenomenon is taking hold: the Save Our Starbucks campaign.

In towns as small as Bloomfield, N.M., and metropolises as large as New York, customers and city officials are starting to write letters, place phone calls, circulate petitions and otherwise plead with the coffee company to change its mind.

"Now that it's going away, we're devastated," said Kate Walker, a facilities manager for software company SunGard Financial Systems who recently learned of a store closing in New York City.

Her hopes were dashed last week when Starbucks released the list of the stores it plans to close. She jumped on the Internet to find a phone number for the company's main office so she can ask officials to reconsider. "Knowing Starbucks, there's probably [another] one within a few blocks," she said. "But that's probably two blocks too far."

Online, several "Save Our Starbucks" petitions have popped up for stores across the country, including locations in San Diego, Dallas and New York City.

    I wasn't impressed with it.

I knew this one chick in high school who was consumed with being trendy. She'd fucking drive 40 minutes just to go to starbucks.

I see everyone now with those funny rectangular glasses now, to me they look ugly but it's in style now.

Agreed. I've never liked Starbucks coffee, and it's bitter and over-rated. Starbucks tried a marketing concept based on being 'authentic' and 'original' but in the end....it's a chain.

    And it sux.

Starbucks rocks so hard. I am not one for trends. The reason I went there in the first time was because I ran out of Maxwell House. I was on the way to work and saw a Starbucks. I decided to try it out. I fell in love on the first sip.

The reason I keep going back is convenience and espresso. Espresso machines are expensive, and a pain in the ass. I love my Venti coffee with two shots of espresso. I am probably pushing 500mg of caffeine in that one drink.

About half of the stores in Mobile are closing, but my favorite locations aren't going to be one of the stores closed.

Never tasted bitterness, but coffee that costs more than gasoline is a sham. I haven't looked into it but supposedly the corporate side of Starbucks is more shit than savior, i.e. forcing people off their land and such? Who knows. They are hated by some people, and not just for the coffee but the politics.

Agreed, pretty much all of them probably have done something shady to stay on top at some point. Always justified in one manner or another.

They now have a drink with whey. I haven't tried it yet because it has added fiber, I'm not down with that added fiber. I like the strong drip coffee though!!

They don't have 100% Kona coffee so I don't drink their, hell the gas station has Royal Kona brewed fresh. I really like the Lion Coffee Brand, right now they have Special Edition Kona Peaberry and their Sumatra which are really good. I also love their Espresso and Macadamia flavored blends...

    You lucky bastard

Kona isn't readily available here or I would buy it - I got some one time when I went to Hawaii and it was the best coffee I've ever had.
