The U.S. and Europe must become better friends and allies, Barack Obama told 200,000 joyous Germans at a festival-like spectacle in Berlin Thursday designed to show American voters his global appeal.
The Democratic presidential candidate spoke from the monumental Victory Column, near where the Berlin Wall once divided the German capital.
Obama used the memory of that Cold War symbol to argue Europe and the U.S. must show the same unity defeating terrorism as they did downing communism.
"The greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another," Obama said.
"The walls between old allies on either side of the Atlantic cannot stand," he said. "The walls between races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand.
"These now are the walls we must tear down," he added, echoing Ronald Reagan's 1987 challenge to the Soviets to demolish the barrier.
Even as European opinions of America hover at historic lows, many waved American flags for a man Germans dubbed the "new black Kennedy." It was a scene designed to buttress Obama's claim that he can win back America's friends.
"He's extremely charismatic ... quite a bit more intellectual than the current President," said Wolfgang Zuchowsky, a retired Berlin cop.
Obama urged the throng filling a park to look beyond the ill will many hold for America after the Bush administration ignored European opposition to the Iraq war, when then-Defense Secretary Don Rumsfeld infamously mocked "old Europe."
"I know my country has not perfected itself," Obama said. "We've made our share of mistakes, and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions."
But he said those who see America as "part of what has gone wrong in our world" are as misguided as Americans who "deride and deny" Europe's importance.
The Democratic White House hopeful also had tough love for Germans that didn't win cheers, such as urging Germans to boost their efforts in Afghanistan.
Obama introduced himself "not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen," apparently mindful of criticism at home for jaunting around the world as if he already were the President.
John McCain, trying to get some coverage during the international Obamathon, went to a German restaurant in Ohio to take a jab at his rival.
"I'd love to give a speech in Germany," McCain told reporters. "I'd much prefer to do it as President."

Good thing the Europeans aren't voting.

This is the guy who couldn't make time for a trip to Iraq for years despite bashing the war efforts from the get-go, but he has time to campaign in Europe?
He is doing this for the benefit of liberals, who have for many decades thought that Europe was superior to America.

Hello everyone,
As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass
along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on
his visit to 'The War Zone'. I wanted to share with you what happened.
He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the
area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here
at Bagram.
As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and
didn't say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the
General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty
much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work
out in with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing
basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to
thank them for their service.
So really he was just here to make a showing for the American's back
home that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are
going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank
those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you.
I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the
Dallas Cowboy Cheer leaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to
be the President of the United States. I just don't understand how
anyone would want him to be our Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that
he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and
our great country.
If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I
wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is. What
you see in the news is all fake.
In service,

I found this on facebook. I didn't write it, but I agree with it for the most part.
"Should Barack Obama become the President he will become the first unchecked liberal president since Jimmy Carter. I say unchecked, because Bill Clinton had a conservative Congress to balance him out. Obama would be supported by a Congress with a liberal majority.
We needn't look far back in our history to see the unyielding failures of President Carter. Not only did he achieve very little in the way of results, but he endangered Americans and empowered our enemies at the time. As a result, his job approval ratings fell from nearly 70% at his inauguration to just over 30% in 1981 (very similar to the approval ratings of the current president).
Today's world is much like the world during the beginning of the Carter administration. Carter followed Nixon, a man who had rightfully been criticized for his illegal actions. Obama would follow Bush, a man who has been criticized for many of his unpopular actions. Carter entered into a weakening economy, Obama would do the same. Carter entered a world where the Cold War was heating up and needed to be dealt with, Obama would enter a world where terrorism is is taking hold and cannot be left unchecked.
Carter was very liberal, you could easily make the case the Obama is even more liberal. Carter's policies failed. Consistently. Why should we think that Obama's will succeed? History is repeating itself here."

Officer: Part of anti-Obama e-mail was wrong
By Matthew Cox and Rick Maze - Staff writers
Posted : Sunday Jul 27, 2008 10:04:27 EDT
An Army officer’s negative e-mail account of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s visit with the troops in Afghanistan that set the blogosphere ablaze prompted Army officials to correct aspects of the e-mail and resulted in a statement from the message’s author that “some of the information that was put out in my e-mail was wrong.”
The e-mail, signed by Capt. Jeffrey S. Porter at Bagram Airbase, characterized Obama’s July 19 visit with soldiers there as contrary to the positive portrayals of the mainstream press.
“As the soldiers where (sic) lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn’t say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the general,” the e-mail said.
Porter wrote that Obama then went straight to the base’s “Clamshell” or recreation facility to pose for “publicity pictures playing basketball” and “shunned the opportunity to talk to soldiers to thank them for their service. I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States. I just don’t understand how anyone would want him to be our Commander-in-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country.”
Army Times sent an e-mail to Porter, a Utah Army National Guard member assigned to the 142nd Military Intelligence Battalion, asking if he could verify that he wrote the controversial e-mail and requesting an interview.
Porter’s reply declined the interview request, but said:
“I am writing this to ask that you delete my e-mail and not forward it, after checking my sources some of the information that was put out in my e-mail was wrong. This e-mail was meant only for my family. Please respect my wishes and delete the e-mail and if there are any blogs you have my e-mail portrayed on I would ask if you would take it down too.”
When contacted, Tiffany Porter who identified herself as his wife, said: “There were discrepancies in the e-mail, but I am not at liberty to say more.”
The Army refuted the accuracy of the account of the Obama visit.
“These comments are inappropriate and factually incorrect,” Bagram spokesman Lt. Col. Rumi Nielson-Green told the New York Daily News.
Obama didn’t play basketball at Bagram or visit the Clamshell, she said.
“We were a bit delayed ... as he took time to shake hands, speak to troops and pose for photographs,” Nielson-Green said.
Opinion aside, Obama campaign officials cited factual errors in the e-mail. Porter said Obama had gone to play basketball; Obama aides said that during the trip he only played basketball in Kuwait, not during stops in Iraq or Afghanistan.
An Obama campaign Web site, called “Fight the Smears,” labels it a “lie” that Obama refused to meet with the troops. It includes links to news stories and videos showing Obama interacting with crowds of service members as evidence.

FactCheck.org: Ask FactCheck
Did Obama snub U.S. troops in Afghanistan to shoot baskets for publicity pictures?
This is another viral e-mail falsehood. The author now says it's not true; the Army says it's not true; and video and photos show Obama shaking hands with troops and eating breakfast with them as well.

FactCheck.org: Ask FactCheck
You ask the questions and they will answer.
This place is pretty interesting...not sure if it's bias but it has also sided with McCain.
AHHH MAN!!! CPT Porter a turd too!!! now the part about obama officials denying it of course they would!!! thats what they do "damage control" but the guy admitted that he made that up!!! what a turd!!! i would have stuck with it just because i dont like obama!!! lol

If it comes down to it, can I be the guy on the grassy knoll?
So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
to improve their lives.
DOMS i already reserved that spot, you have to take the window!! or be the "third" guy!! lol
We just ran a story about Barrack having hip pain, then I remembered this story. Then I put them together and now I think one of the guys out there got so angry at him they shot him in a non-lethal manner and he's just saying it's "hip pain." If he didn't shake my hand after I put my life on the line, I'd be pissed too!![]()

Well, regardless of the e-mail account's accuracy or relevance....
Does anyone really think that Obama, who has bashed the war in every possible fashion, went over there to say hi to the guys? I mean, come on, he's milking every campaign opportunity he can right now....while McCain is napping....or in a coma.
And I'll bet Obama sucks at basketball.![]()

I am totally against this war but I do support the troops.
They are just following orders they were sworn to follow it's not their fault we have idiots running the show.
I am proud to have 2 nephews and 1 niece in the military and I will also encourage my kids to do so.

Absolutely. We don't need another Viet Nam campaign against the troops. I have a huge admiration for these men and women.
I think politicians trying to use this, or any other conflict to their advantage should be made to stand on point for a few months.....dodge a few missiles, witness a few car bombs.....and not playing H-O-R-S-E with people all of the time.
